My motor cranks very quick, idles ok to good. My tack is out but when I start giving it gas to increase my speed it starts to bog down. It will not even push my 17' basstracker fast enough to plain out. I was on the river when this happened and I was running good when all of a sudden I lost power could only get back at a very slow speed(Low RPM's). I just finished changing the waterpump out and have disconnected the oil injection. I now mix my fuel and this still hasn't helped. All Plugs are getting fire, carbs?? It idels good? Thinking about overhauling them to rule the 3 of them out. Going to Buy a timming light to check the timing but i'm not sure how to change or adjust the timing if off. Someone told me that it could be the Carb,Sink link ???? Don't know what that is exactly? Thanks for your help and email me at sgtjmatthews@hotmail.com

SgtJMatthews

The fact that this happened suddenly would tend to indicate some debris is floating around in the carbs and has clogged one or more of the high speed passages/jets. However, before doing rebuilds, check compression. Timing usually doesn't just suddenly change so I doubt that's the problem. If it makes you feel better, check idle timing. As for sync & link, thats the process of synchronizing the carbs with each other as well as with the ignition timing. Again, this problem happened suddenly so sync & link does not fit the symptom. If you intend to do any of this work yourself, do yourself a big favor and buy a "good" service manual.

Definitely do a compression check first, but keep in mind that just because your getting fire to the sparkplugs doesn't mean they are firing when inside the compressed atmosphere of the cylinder

Thanks for the information, I will purchase a comp. guage and check all three cylinders. Is there an easy way to clean the carbs. without stripping them completely down??? I have ordered a OMC year specific manual and should get it soon! I have replaced a inline fuel filter and looked for a screen under the cover but the fuel pump looks diffrent than the pictures I got from a library book. It says that it is VRO2 setup. I called about getting a Mech. to overhaul my carbs and they want $280.00 on average so I'm going to try it myself with my digital camera. Thanks again and I will let you all know what I find.
SEMPER FI!

SGTJMATTHEWS

You shouldn't have any trouble rebuilding the carbs with the manual you ordered. See, it already paid for itself.

Isn't there a shut down mode for motors that overheat. I am not sure of your motor but I think if it gets too hot it will shut down and the dealer has to reset it. Someone will undoubtly tell you on this forum. If you installed the water pump before this happened it may be overheating, and it shut down to the limp in mode.

You could have dropped a cylinder. Check for spark when it does this with a buddy and a timing light.

Thanks for the information. I have started working and will be off again on tuesday. The rebuild kits are in and they cost $51.00 so it will work out great if I can do this my self. As for the shutdown, it does have one but I believe that I would hear the horn keep going off. I will have to wait and see if anyone on this web site answers your statement/question.!!! It would be nice if that was all that was wrong. When someone says that you drop a cylinder do you mean that you loose spark going to the plug or something else???? Thanks in advance and I truly appreciate everyones input..

Semper Fi!
SgtJMatthews

Yes dropping a cylinder means you lose spark to it. If your engine has a powerpack it could be suspect if you do not get spark. When you lose power have a buddy put the timing light in each wire and check for spark. Sometimes when these packs go bad they start showing the symptoms you describe. Like I said though, I do not have a manual for your engine but I do think that yours has the packs.

Great! Carb rebuild is cheaper than a powerpack or coil. Glad you could do it yourself. I hope that you get the time off to enjoy your engine.
