I was wondering if there was any way to check if the triggering device on a '71 115 Johnson. THis particular part is from the time where the triggering system and the charging system were all integrated into one part. The part number from what we can decipher is 1JMTW1 583537. The part is a Mallory, obviously, and it is important to know that the second to last letter in the first part of the part number could be an H. Thanks for the help

Re: Ignition Troubles

They did not make a 115 in 1971. There were 115's in 1969 and '70. If you could post the model number we would know which engine you have.

Re: Ignition Troubles

Johnson nor Evinrude manufactured a 115hp engine in 1971. Also, none of their engines had a trigger (ignition sensor or points) assembly that was incorporated into their charging system.

However, OMC #583537 is a stator assy which does shed some light on this as your V4 engine and other models from 1973 on incorporate battery charging coils (Alternator AC converted to DC via a rectifier) and also two black coils which provide approximately 300v (AC) to the powerpack(s).

What is the model number of your engine? With this info, we may be able to pinpoint the test you're searching for.
