1971 18 Horse Evinrude. Motor does not idle very well. It idles for about 30 seconds and then dies. My plan is to clean the carborator. Any advice?

Rebuild the carburetor. That means total disassembly, soaking all parts, making sure every passage and jet is squeaky clean and blown out with compressed air. Install a new kit. Do not reuse the old parts. If idle mixture is adjustable, you need to do that with the engine in the water, not on muffs.

I rebuilt the Carborator on the 18 horse envinrude. It really didnt fix the idle problem though. It idles for a short time then sounds like it is missing the spark ingnition. someone told me that it may be the points and that there are two of them. ?????

You have a seperate magneto for each cyl. 2 sets of pts, 2 cond. and 2 coils--Bob

so is that what could be causing the motor to die at an idle? the points? if so, what now?

Hello.
You say that it does not idle very well.Does it do well at a higher rpm? Does it idle better or worse with the choke activated?
I am asking this because it can pinpoint your problem.Your fuel supply is not only your carburator. There may be a fuel pump problem or a dirty fuel filter or a pinhole size hole in your fuel line which causes it to suck air. Does the ball in your fuel line stay hard or does it go soft or flat when you run the engine? Check those simple problems before going under the flywheel.
Good luck.

Re: Evinrude Carborator

alright, i went outside an started it up. Second pull it fired right up. I warmed it up and when i had it going at a high rpm it ran beautifully. there was literally no vibration at all. but when i idled it down, it ran good for 7 seconds and then died. about 10 seconds was the average time it would idle. ive never owned a 2-cycle before. but im pretty sure and have been told that it should idle at a low rpm all day and be fine. i pushed in the choke when the motor was warm and it died. last week i got a new gas can and cleaned the hose and filter in the hose. it ran the same with the older hose, so i know its not the hose.

i also checked the ball in the fuel line. it wasnt hard, it was soft but i could tell that some gas was in the line.

Try pumping the bulb while the engine is idleing. Does it make it better/worse or no difference. That will really help narrow it down.

Just to be sure, which spark plugs have you got in it and what's the gap? (Don't worry if you don't know what the gap is.)

PS - reving the engine in neutral is really bad for a two stroke. I'm sure roscoe ment to do that in the water on a boat.

Re: Evinrude Carborator

okay, the spark plugs are B8S. when it was idleing, the ball on the fuel line was firm, when i tried pumping it, it was to frim to make a difference. when it was soft as mentioned above, it was at a higher idle.

Re: Evinrude Carborator

Ok, by pumping the primer while the engine idled (even if it was too hard to pump) you basically do the work of the outboard's fuel pump. It'll also mask any fuel leak at the fuel line to outboard connection which can also be a problem.
If the fuel pump diaphram had a hole in it, or the needle valve in the carb was leaking, pumping the primer would have made it run worse.

So i'm inclined to think like Laddies that simply tuning up the points would solve your problem. Just a basic cleaning and timing setting. You must remove the flywheel to access them and for this you'll need a flywheel puller. An inexpensive but beefy automotive 'Harmonic Balancer Puller', equipped with three 1/4"-20tpi grade 5 or better bolts works nicely. A service manual is manditory.

I really hate to tell you to go buy stuff without being certain of the problem, but it's possible that the NGK plugs are the culprit. They don't cross very well from Champions and can be real trouble on J/E engines. The speced plug is Champion J4C gapped at .030". The alternative plug is Champion J6C gapped at .030", which is a little hotter and would be better for trolling and idling. The B8S is at the extreme end for a cold plug on this engine, making it ill-suited for low speed running.
