Hello all...newbie here. Bought my first pontoon boat last month. Been getting it ready for some serious shrimping on the Indian River and have been tuning the engine. Right now it's putt, putt, putting along pretty good, but stalling out when I accelerate. As long as I just idle along, the engine runs fine. I suspect the fuel system, so I have replaced the primer bulb and fuel line. The fuel hoses inside the engine cowling seem cracked, so I thought I'd replace them too. I can't seem to find an in-line fuel filter anywhere on this engine (115 hp Evinrude #j115999r), just the screen in the fuel pump. Is this engine not supposed to have an in-line filter? If so, where does it go. There's not much room between the plug-on fitting and the fuel pump. How do I replace the two hoses that go from the tee to the bottom of the carbs? Do I have to remove the carbs to replace these two fuel lines?
Also thought I'd rebuild the fuel pump while I have it off the engine. There are two metal reeds in the fuel pump that seem to have some pitting and corrosion on them. Should they be replaced also? Will they come with the rebuild kit?
Sorry for all the elementary questions, but I would really appreciate any help you guys can offer.

The engine in those years only had the screen at the pump. You can buy an in-line filterr from you r local, friendly BOMB dealer and install it before the filter!

P.V.
Thanks for the quick reply. There's not very much hose from the plug-on fitting to the fuel pump...I don't think there's room here for an in-line filter. Can a person put an in-line filter outside the engine, before the plug-on fitting?
Since this engine didn't come with a filter, will adding a filter affect performance?

Thanks!

An inline filter can go anywhere between the tank and the motor. If you have room for one, a water seperator/filter would be better.

Re: 1979 115hp Evinrude-where is my fuel filter?

Hello fellow boaters, I have a 1970 Evinrude 115HP. A cuople weekends ago I was cruising across the lake and the motor started to stall out like it was out of fuel. I checked both tanks and they both had plenty of fuel so I pumped up the primer ball untill it was hard again and the motor fired but only would run for few seconds. I took the boat home and replaced the fuel pump. It seemed to have fixed the problem but to no avail it happened again, but this time when I returned home I hooked the motor up to the water hose and tried to fire it up to see if it would fire. It did fire and ran fine. I then whent back to the lake and agin it died on me. Soi far I have replaced the fuel pump, all the fuel lines and primer ball. I thought then maybe it's electrical so I changed the ignition awitch but still the motor will fire but only for a few seconds. Any answer's would br greatly appriciated.

IBNFSHN,
Can the water separator/fuel filter be mounted on the back of my pontoon ABOVE my motor? It would have to be about 12" above the top of the motor cowling. Is the fuel pump strong enough to lift fuel that high?

Thanks!
