serial 1334229.supposed to be a 69 but I found out its a 70 anyway...I just got this motor and while it did have a wiring harness on it...it had no controls..lucky for me I had a controller here with full wirning harness only the old one had a black head on the main connection while this one is yellow...the guy I bought it from did say he had a evinrude push button controller on it..and mine is the white hydro for johnsons...also I have one smaller wire[black] left over had about say small head on it to use with a post..but there is nothing left on the motor to bolt it to.. anyway..this has been sitting about 2 years..so # any ideals what that extra wire is and is there anything I need to double check befor adding a battery and water to the foot prior to starting...?????.
ps its not stuck or anyting the guy did oil it a bit at times and rolled it over using a wreach on the flywheel..he said he never had to force it to rollover..I tried that myself and he is right its smooth but seems to have compression...that I will have to check too I guess..darlie
ps. you guys would have laughed..myself and my 15 year old son using a strap pull system for hanging deer up with to raise the old girl off the palett and onto a stand...

The yellow plug controller won't work with your motor. They're color-coded, and you need one that has a black plug, just like your motor does.

The difference isn't cosmetic. Your motor has an ignition system that is powered by the battery. The yellow plug controller is for a few smaller Evinrude/Johnsons that have a self-powered ignition, with the hydroelectric foot(1971 & 72 50hp twin, and 1972 65hp triple). You need one with the round black plug. Either the Evinrude (pushbutton) or Johnson (single lever) will work fine.

ok hhmm a buddy of mine works on these things as a pro..he told me yesterday that the control should work...that the black wire was just a ground and to ground it to the block..I admit I had my doubts..but I went ahead and tried it..now my batt was low..so I am charging it now..but I did try it and it at least tried to spin the starter befor dying out..[the batt I mean]my friend said I might have to leave that ground off..jut to try it and see...yet you say it will not work..dang..the pins all seem to be in the right place..and it is a single stick controller..

FYI as a fellow owner of a similar motor (69' 85hp evinrude), be careful when hooking up wires on that engine. The amplifiers are in the $200 range.
