I have acquired an old Johnson sea horse engine that has a model number - HD 25. I looked up the model number online and found out that it dates between 1946 and 1950. I have tried to rebuild the engine, but hit a wall when I try to find parts. I need to get two points, two condensors, and two coils. Anyone know where to start looking? I have tried asking around at the local dealers and repair shops with no luck. They all say it is too old. What to do?

Hopefully someone will steer you to the antique outboard areas to obtain parts. The part numbers, date of unavailability, and prices at that time follow.

Breaker Point Assy #580016 - NA 1986 - $24.75

Condenser #300153 - NA 1992 - $7.00

Coil #375189 - NA 1981 - 28.00

You can get the points and condensors here:
Laing's

They might be able to help you with the coil too, but they're hard to find new. I've heard they're very reliable though (unlike the later magneto ones) so you may not need them.

It's a common magneto for the 40s Johnsons. Used parts wouldn't have to come from a 2-1/2. Too bad you didn't do an eBay search last week. I auctioned a running HD-25 and the winning bid was $10.63. :(

The points on those are made specifically to be resurfacable. There's a lot of material to work with and they adjust to compensate.

After the guy left with it, I realized I forgot to give him the parts manual I had for it. I emailed him for his address to send it, but haven't heard back. If he doesn't get back to me, it's yours. Go to the icon just above with the little man standing by a house. That'll link you with my website. Have your pop-up blocker turned on. My email is on the bottom left.

I'm tuning up an HD-25 in my shop at the moment. Those first post WWII ignition systems used on the 2.5s and 5s were quite robust and didn't have the coil problems that the later ones did. Are you replacing parts just to have them "new", or are they known bad? More than likely, the points and coils can be used (assuming they're not outwardly damaged), and there's a godo chance the condensers are okay, too. If the condensers are not usable, you might want to try a modern replacement. I think the later Johnrude 2-cylinder condensers are close enough on the mf (microfarad) scale to be usable without burning points.
Good luck!
- Scott
