hi everyone,
i have an exscessive amount of water coming from exhaust, just below the cowling of a 40 hp evinrude.
had not noticed this befor. It seems to pour out of it.
the motor ran really bad. i returned the motor to neutral and used the throttle control.
the motor really struggled, was just able to run.
but not in gear.
so i turned it off. smart move i hope.
i was at about half throttle at the time it went pear shapped. the water was shooting out about a foot from the exhaust relief.
i dont think this is normal, i would expect some water but not this much, and to cause the motor to struggle like that i just don't know.
please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. where do i start looking.
cheers and safe boating people.
evil chuckie. :p

G'Day Chuckie.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Tell us the model number of your Evinrude.

Start with a compression check. Let us know the result.

Good luck. :)

I think you have a 1995 Evinrude 40hp engine, Chuckie.

The compression test will tell us if you have a blown head gasket or some other water jacket failure.

Re: excessive water out exhaust relief

yeh, and what ive been reading i should get a compression of about 100 psi give or take 15 psi.
hey JB thanks again for the reply. Ill get back to u on how it went. If it is the head, which after some reading and picking the brains of some guys here at work. i think it is the head gasket or water jacket failure.
I love a challenge so i might attempt to do this one myself. hey what better way to get to know the motor, than to pull the basturd apart.
Be warned though, once i hit trouble and no doubt there will be because thats life my friend, i may need from u, a little info and help to get through this one.
Im actually looking forward to doing this, now that the problem has arrived.
I reckon i have a bit of time to fix this. We are coming up to our winter very soon. Winter in Tasmania can be a little harsh for boating unless your into lake fishing for trout.
I never really got into trout fishing much. It is a challenge though.
anyway got to go.
cheers.
evil chuckie

Re: excessive water out exhaust relief

Hi JB back again.
Just maybe the problem here might not be the head or a major leak through exhaust.
I checked compression and was around 100psi on top. The bottom was the same i think until i blew the side out of the handheld compression tester which i borrowed. Why does that **** always happen when u borrow something.
anyway moving right along.
engine idles nice but when i put revs on with hand throttle for about 60 seconds or so it bogs down and stalls. But this is the one. it will start again straight away on idle.
what the @*!%#. is with that mate.
the squeeze bulb at the fuel tank does not stay hard.
maybe i have a carb or fuel pump problem.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated or i will have to just bite the bullet and send it in to the mechanic and my backyard mechanic days are over.
love tinkering with this stuff, so i would love to do this myself, but hey sometimes its time for the professionals to take over.
