help with starter

hey all.....my starter is not spinning the flywheel....i have a 90hp '95 johnson....a buddy suggests i hit it with a wrench while someone tries to start it....is this bad advice?

If you hit it to hard you will seperate the magnets inside from the housing. You can tap it but not recommended. How is the state of charge of the battery. A weak battery will also do the same thing. Hope the info helps.

the battery is fully charged....so u say give it a light tapping?

Is the starter spinning at all or does nothing happen when you turn the key? If it is spinning but the flywheel is not turning, see if you can turn the bendix counter clockwise to see if it rises up to mesh with the flywheel teeth. Sometimes they stick. You also said the battery is fully charged. That does not mean its a good battery. Use a known good battery -- like the one from your car to prove the battery is not the problem.

problem solved! i overlubed the bendix....cleaned it yup & she turned right over! Hope no damage is done from hittin' the starter! LOL
