I was recently given a Sea Horse - no idea how long since it last ran. The only information visible on it (other than seeing that has 2-cylinders) are two numbers:

J4BRHCRM (possibly the model number?)
E5870686 (I believe that this is the serial number)

Any information (even just the year) would be appreciated!

That's a 1984 4HP Johnson, Larry, unless the "B" is really an "8", then it is a 1984 48HP.

I suspect it is the 4, because a recoil start (the "R") 48HP would be really rare.

Welcome to iboats, and good luck. :)

Welcome to Iboats, larrywl!
4BRHCR is a 4hp '84 Johnson. I belive the BRH indicates it's from the Belgian plant, that it's rope start, and that it doesn't have a built-in gas tank. Fuel mix is 50:1 87 octane gas to TC-W3 rated outboard oil. Spark plugs are Champion QL86C or L86C gapped at .030" (the Q plug will suppress radio noise).
Here's a helpful webpage:
Johnson 4hp webpage.

EDIT: JB - I was able to find J4BRHCR in the OMC/Evinrude model list as an '84 4hp. I think it's just a European number.

Amazing! Thank you both very much for the speedy reply and the abundant information! It is a rope start with external gas supply, and is definitely not a 40HP motor, so it must be 4HP.

I'll be pulling the motor apart during the next couple of days to clean her up and try her out, and will definitely use this wonderful site to help debug any problems that I may encounter.

(And thank you for the welcome, too!)

Hi I have had one of those for twenty years and its never let me down. A good little engine worth the effort
PS dont touch that screw on top of the cover as its for the recoil(pull start) you need the patience of a saint and the arms of an octapus to put that spring back in!! (first lesson I learned)
