Why won't the motor start?

I rebuilt the top end and bottom end and tilt system on my 1982 115HP Evinrude outboard. I turn the key, the starter spins, not fast and constant, but slowly and intermittantly. The motor does not start. There is a fuel pump with a nozzle on top that squirts gas out when I press the key in. I took a test light to the fuel pump, and there is no power. Does this fuel pump send the gas to the carbs? Anything I need to look at/for? It did start once, but never again.

Thanks!

MAX

Check your battery for a full charge and check all connections to be sure they are clean and tight. The thing you are refering to as a fuel pump is your choke or in this case its called an enrichner. It squirts gas into the carbs for easier starting. With the plugs out, can you turn the engine over by hand allright?

THanks for the response. The engine does turn over by hand. I checked all of the connections, they are fine. What else do you recomend? Should the starter be so weak? Also, sometimes, the little gear on top of the starter does not retrat from the big gear. Any ideas?

Sounds like your starter needs a good cleaning.

Go to Engine FAQs and do the starter circuit troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start". You may find a connection that looks good but isn't.

Re: Why won't the motor start?

Thanks, another quick question. On the fuel pump, there are two nozzles. One that is attached to the bottom of the pump and one that attaches to a disk mounted on the side of the fuel pump. Which nozzle goes to the carbs, and which nozzle goes to the fuel source? Maybe I got my tubes crossed! Thanks.
