Last year I bought a boat trailer,14ft aluminum boat and a small motor.I put alot of money into the boat and trailer.Still had alot of work to do on it before it hit water. Then it snowed and put things on hold till it warmed up a little.Never got the chance to finish.Woke up one morning and my boat was gone.Stolen right off the trailer. The motor was in my basement and the trailer was to heavy to lift.Had it blocked in by cars.A freind of mine heard about a boat some guy wanted out of his yard.I went over to look at and took it home same day.15 ft glass with a 1973 115hp evinrude.Motor was rebuilt last season and the receipts were in the glove comp.Sold old trailer to get new stuff for my new boat.Ive never owned or driven a boat before.Ive never started one either. Well i got it home and charged the battery.Crancked and crancked but wouldnt fire.
found the safty plug that kills ignition and pluged it in.It started and i juiced it a couple times and shut it down. All without cooling. After reading and searching i found that this wasnt a good thing to do and was told i probably fried the waterpump.I bought some muffs and tried starting it with them on but im not sure what im supposed to be looking for eg:damaged parts? Could someone tell me what damage to look for?
Also the correct starting procedure?

Welcome to iboats.

First thing you need to do is purchase a shop manual.
Its a good chance you could have toasted the water pump by running the engine without water.

Might as well replace the pump anyways? With the manual it is a pretty easy task to do.

Like i said though, this motor was rebuilt less than a year ago.Everything was replaced.Including the waterpump. The receipt says it was anyways. As far as i can tell the whole motor was overhauled.I would rather not replace a part if its not bad.I dont know how to tell if its bad.If i replace it and i do something wrong i dont know how to tell if its working.Besides that that pump is a 100 bucks.Ive spent 1800 on the boat so far, hope wifey doesnt read this, and will spend as much as i have to.Really hope she doesnt read that. I work as an auto mechanic so its really hard for me to replace parts without being sure they are broke. Is there a way to test them?

If you are sure that your horn buzzer is working properly you could probably run the engine with the muffs.
You can test the horn:
1. Turn on key but dont start.
2. Ground out the single wire (think its tan) on the starboard head. The buzzer should sound.

After cranking the engine, never rev the engine in nuetral with the muffs. The engine should never get to hot to touch with your hand. A small amount water will should spray out the two small holes in rear of the engine.

that horn buzzer i take it sounds when the motor gets to hot hmmmmmm didnt know it had a way to monitor temp.....and water was coming out of 2 holes on back of motor. A real fine mist. There are also two little hole down below the cavitation plate{<--new word i learned from this site ty}that water pours out of, not a mist but a steady stream.ill try running it again tomorow. Thanks for the help

I'm gonna state the obvious...is a 115hp motor a good idea on a 15' boat? Holy crow!
