Evinrude 9.5 and propellers

I have a 1964 Evinrude 9.5 that runs pretty good.

It is on a 14' welded aluminum boat that weighs about 230 lbs. when it is empty. I will be using the boat to carry a combination of passengers and gear weighing anywhere from 250 lbs. to a maximum of 450 lbs. I will be primarily using it for duck hunting, sometimes in flooded fields with the potential for lots of grass and weeds, and fishing on small lakes or small rivers.

My propeller may be the original prop. I am considering replacing it since it is greatly dinged, nicked, and somewhat bent. I can find a number of propellers for this engine but have no idea what the size and pitch of the original prop is (was).

I am also somewhat ignorant of the pluses and minus of the following sizes and characteristics of replacement propellers.

7-3/4 x 6-1/2
8-1/4 x 8
8-1/4 x 8-1/2
8-1/4 x 9
8 1/8 x 8 - semi weedless
8 1/4 x 8 - weedless

Advice that provides some comparison and contrast between the above propellers sizes and pitches and between "standard" prop designs and "semi weedless" and "weedless" designs will be greatly appreciated.

Well, as I have learned on this site, You need to put your average load in the boat and get a tach and find out what your wot rpms are and go from ther as to what prop to purchase.

I belive the max operating rpms for the 9.5 is 4500.

If you don't have a tach your guessing.
Heres a site for a tach: www.tinytach.com

Re: Evinrude 9.5 and propellers

Thanks for the responses so far.

I don't know the size of the prop that is currently on the moter. I believe it is the original prop but am not sure. The edges of the prop are in pretty rough shape and I don't think that I can get an accurite measurement when many of my choices are only 1/8 inch apart.

I was hoping someone knew what the standard size prop and pitch for these motors originally were.

Thanks for the info on the standard rpm's, that is helpful but how do I try different size props without buying several. While they don't cost s fortune, they aren't cheap either. I can't imagine that there are many places that have loaner props for such an obscure motor.

I am hoping that someone who has a simular setup has somehow already determined a satisfactory combination.

Thanks again for any help that you may be able to offer.

Duckhunting Fool

Re: Evinrude 9.5 and propellers

In '64 the only prop that was offered was 8-1/4 x 8-1/2. But that's no guarantee that's whats on there now or that is what should be on there. To see what it is, check all the fins for a number. If that reveals nothing, remove the cone, shear pin and thrust washer. On the top of the prop near the hub there should be a number. It may be hard to make out.
The WOT (Wide open throttle) RPM range for that engine is 4000-5000 RPMS. It makes 9.5hp when operating at 4500. Generally speaking, you want to have the WOT RPMS near the high end of the range when your boat is lightly loaded so that it will not be lugging when the boat is heavily loaded.
Without knowing what RPMS your making, it's really a guessing game. You could pick up a tinytach www.tinytach.com to find out. Iboats member wayne34609 has a experimented quite a bit with the 9.5, hopefully he'll be along shortly to provide some advice. But I don't know how similar his aerocraft is to your rig.

Re: Evinrude 9.5 and propellers

Thanks for your help Paul.

I have looked at the tiny-tach site and have to admit that I don't know enough about the 9.5 technichally to know which tiny-tach is the correct one.

It looks like the standard model 2c is probably the correct one. Could you confirm that the 9.5 fires one spark on each revolution of the crankshaft?

Do you have any idea where I can find information on the differences between "regular" props, "semi-weddless" props and "weedless" props? I have done a google search without finding anything solid and would like to know if these discriptions are just marketing or if there is a real difference and if what the trade-off is.

Thanks again

No trouble Fool. :)
The 9.5 fires one spark on each revolution, but I think tinytach has a special one with a filter which works better for J/E outboards. Best to phone them up and find out for sure before ordering.
Its a bit of a guess, but I think you'll end up with a 8-1/4 x 8. I would still like to see what Wayne says about it.

The 'weedless' props are supposed to shed weeds better than a regular prop. They have a bit of a cork-screw appearance to them. I've got one on my 4hp, and in conjuntion with the 110° drive (the propshaft slants downwards) it works quite well at keeping the prop clear. The trade-off is speed & performance, but I would probably go for one if weeds were a real problem.

Re: Evinrude 9.5 and propellers

ok this is a trying questions. i have 3 props that i play with 1 like 1 better for cruising and 1 for trolling it depends where i am going and what i am gonna do on the water. also depends on the boat and load u are pushing. its hard to really say what will work for best for you.
8-1/4 seems to be a nice all around prop for these motors. i dont think there was a set prop for these motors since i have seen about 10-15 of these motors and have messed with about 8 diffrent props on my motors they all seemed to be diffrent and had its pros and cons for them all. but remember to always use a stainless cotter pin ;)

Re: Evinrude 9.5 and propellers

Thanks to both Paul and Wayne for their advice.

I may end uop getting two propellers. I will probably start out with a regular design prop of 8-1/4x8 or 8-1/4x8-1/2 and see how that does.

If I have problems with weeds next hunting season, then I will probably buy a weedless or semi-weedless design for hunting during the fall-winter hunting season and alternate it with the regular prop during the spring-summer fishing season.

Any additional suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: Evinrude 9.5 and propellers

1 more thing that really helped my motor and boat out was a Sting Ray Jr. Hydrofoil Stabilizer
i have never really liked them on bigger boats but i fish alone and it really helped keeping the nose down and getting on plane faster. i found mine at the local walmart on the clearance rack thats why i gave it a try. no more cooler up front to weight the nose down
