Just purchased a used '74 135hp, with tilt and trim. Paid $1100 for it. Got it all hooked up on a 15'9", Cheater SX by Astroglass. Runs good, pain in *** to start, the idle set screw doesnt seem to contact the stop at an idle, so I need to work on more adjustment on that. If you progressively apply throtle, right before it gets on plane, it boggs and falls on its face and dies. IF you go real slow then stab it it runs fine. When crusing at slow speed on plane, and then push into full throtle, it is fine and revs quite nice, with some good acceleration, seems to cavitate, but thats another day. I am thinking carb adjustment? The person I bought it from went through and cleaned carbs, didnt rebuild or tune, as it wasnt on a baot when he got it and he never ran it. I do have a service manual, just go through and sync carbs, and blades? What about doing timing since i don't have a test prop, do it on the boat in the lake? Dont know the RPM's these are happening at for no tach as of right now. But the bog seems like right where the transistion would be from low to high speed. maybe 2000-2500? Oh and is there a place to hook up water pressure gauge? And out of the control box I have a black, grey and white wires. Black and white make a good 12 volts, so grey is tach hook up? Does this motor have an alternator, or is it an unregulated type system? Thanks- Andy

Welcome Andy. :)
You'll probably want to post your model # on that motor for these guys. They will want to verify that your motor is what you think it is before they start dishing out advice.

Grey is for tach. Does have a charging system although I would not call it an alternator or generator. Sounds like you may have dropped a cylinder. When it bogs down pull the plug wires one at a time and see what happens. If nothing happens you could have a spark problem to that cylinder. Like alden said post the model number and the guys will be along shortly. If you do have a service manual then most of your questions should be answered in there.

Welcome Andy!!

What youre describing is typical for carbs in need of a good bath and new outfits (kits). However lets look at some other things you mentioned.

You said the idle stop screw isnt touching. Is it backed out so far it doesnt touch? It should be about halfway in/out. Give or take some. Depending on which it is, we'll look at that. Follow the book (without the throttle cable attached) for the sync & link starting point.
