First off, let me say thank you for a great site. I have already learned a bunch just reading through old posts. Here is my question;

I have a 1963 Johnson 2stroke 18HP motor. It has a couple of little dials that adjust the richness mixture of the fuel. I am really struggling trying to figure this out.

Of course I don't have an owners manual that will help me adjust it and the Service manual I own is to broad and doesn't cover the exact engine.

If you could please direct me I would appreciate the help. I live in Utah at about 4500 ft and fish anywhere from 4500-8500 ft above sea level.

Thanks again!
Firehawk

PS. If anyone owns this motor's owners manual, does it describe how to adjust the mixture? Thanks!

Re: Choke Help!!

I had an old Johnson. One of the knobs is low speed mixture and the other is high speed mixture. If I remember right, the large knob is the high speed mixture adjust.

The low speed idle is adjusted at idle and the high spped at WOT. It was quite obvious when you got it right.

Re: Choke Help!!

First make sure the packing glands on the needles are tight, tight enough so it's a little hard to turn the needles,then at idle turn the low speed in slowly till the engine coughs thru the carb. Now run the engine at WOT and trun the high speed in till the engine starts to bog, then richen it till it runs top RPM at that point richen it 1/4 turn more, but not enough to lose RPM. I usally do this a couple of times when you are satisfied with it loosen the nobs on the needles and set them in a middle position--Bob Top is idle and bottom is high speed

What do you mean that the needles are tight? Are you referring to tightening the needle adjustment before connecting the adjustment knobs?

Thanks!

FH

No, the packing glands are the fitting that the needles go thru at the face of the carr, there function is to seal the needle so it pulls fuel and not air--Bob
