A friend just gave me an 18hp Sea-Horse, S/N J2453288. Where do I find the model #, and does anyone know the year of this engine?

Find us the model number and we'll find you the year. :)
It should be located on the nameplate, which is attached to one of the transom clamps.

The outboard's transom clamp has the 2 holes for the nameplate, however they don't look like anything has ever been in them. Another thing is the entire motor is painted navy grey, even under the Johnson logos on the sides which don't show any signs of having been removed from the lid. So it's possible that this came from a surplus military auction. Thanks

It looks like we've got luck on our side. A little research of Iboats found these serial numbers and dates:
J2469771 1964
J2453945 1964
J2453288 This is yours here
J2448737 1964
j2440208 1964

So It seems to be most likely a '64. Here's one in the flesh so you can compare looks:

I think your Navy grey is a little different from our Navy grey, so I'll leave the judgement to you. ;)
EDIT: Oh, I should put in the whole auction - there's a number of views of the '64 so you can spot any differences:
