Re: johnson 35hp

you may want to get a manual from iboats or somewhere it will answer a lot of your questions if you dont know boat motors it is next to imposible to work on them without one. good luck

Re: johnson 35hp

You'll find the model and serial numbers on a plate at the front of the transom mount. Once you have that and post it here, along with your questions, I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Re: johnson 35hp

OK, that's a 1976 model. Here's the deal. You need a manual for your motor, either the factory manual or the Seloc manual that covers that year.

I haven't been able to find wiring diagrams on the internet for many outboards, and the manual is going to come in handy many, many times, so I'd just order one up. iboats.com, our host here, has them in stock. Just click the "Manuals" link at the top of the page, then scroll down to find the one you need.

Re: johnson 35hp

That model doesn't come with a charging system. I don't know if a charging system is available for that year's 35. It's still an old-school big twin in 1976, complete with magneto, points, and all that old-style stuff.

Since I don't have one of that vintage (mine's a lot older, although very similar), I can't help with the wiring stuff.

Re: johnson 35hp

The 1976 model of the 35hp was a brand new design introduced that year. Although the ignition system was still a magneto type system incorporating points, it is unlike the earlier self-contained dual coil system that was ubiquitous in earlier engines (from the early 50s onward). The system used on the '76 35hp uses external coils, and one charge coil up underneath the flywheel.
That left room for a stator which fed a rectifier, forming a charging system. It was pretty weak (6A max?), and I believe it was only put on engines with electric starters. If you can identify the rectifier, then you have a charging system. It looks like this:

I think it was mounted on the port side of the engine, around the terminal strip.
As for the schematic - buy a factory manual or borrow one from the library. The factory one is only a couple bucks more than the Seloc or Clymers, but it's worth 3 or four times them. :)

Good luck!

(CATransplant - Please pardon the over-the-shoulder business! I'm sure someone is looking over mine. :) )

Oops! My bad. I misread the drawings over on that other site. I shall be more careful in the future.
