some may have followed my purchase of my new boat- older grady-white with newer yamaha power. everything was great at delivery, really love the boat and engine. when i got the boat home (drove it home via water about 1 1/2 hrs away), everything seemed ok until i tilted the engine. i then saw some sort of oil dripping from under the cowling. talked to dealer and he mentioned fogging oil. i sort of believed him since i couldn't get it to leak again. but then i noticed the engine oil on the high side. i got concerned and sent him an email today asking lots of questions. now this was a brokerage sale, no warranty provided.

at around 4:45pm today, get an email at work- need to talk to you quickly. call me. it was from the dealer. i was just a bit nervous making the call. so i call him. he proceeds to tell me he spoke to his lead mechanic, who wanted to see the engine. he said no guessing, we want to go over the engine from top to bottom, and make sure things are right. now get this- he asks if i'm available in about an hour. i say sure. he says he'll meet me at the boat with a trailer, pull it out and bring it back to the dealer tomorrow. barring any major work required, the boat will be back at the dock tomorrow at the same time as pickup. so i meet him, we pull the boat, and he promises me again that the boat will be back by 6pm tomorrow.

this was the salesman. i was blown away by the level of service. when he left with the boat tonight, he said "i told you i'd take care of you on day one, and that's what i'm doing. don't worry, this engine will be in top shape when you get it back. we'll figure this out."

i can't be upset at all. in fact, i'm happy with everything that's happened. i bought a used boat and used engine. things happen. this could be nothing, but he's going the extra effort to make sure. i am now getting my used engine completely serviced for free.

just wanted to pass this good news. maybe this is how grady always treats their customers. if that's the case, they may have made a life long customer out of me.

There are some very good dealers. They survive on their reputation and repeat business. I have not found one here in Indiana yet, but I did in NY, and in SW Michigan

Sounds like a great all around deal there. I'm curious as to what the problem is. Please post when you get her back.

Tri State Marine...I live right down the road and I saw the boat you purchased (looked like early 1990's model)...It is a nice boat! I almost bought a used Sea Pro there, but it sold in about a day and I ended up getting a new one from another dealer.

I will take my boat there and try them out next time I need some work. Thanks and let me know how it goes.

Re: new boat- great dealer story

got a call today at 11:30am from the service manager. he explained the engine work was complete and that my salesman would be delivering the boat today at 6pm. he said they adjusted the throttle position sensor to set the idle at a nice 750 rpms. also lowered the oil a bit to the full mark. they also spray cleaned the engine and removed any excess oil from the "leak". he explained that an inexperienced mechanic had a bad day changing the oil last fall. he sucked the oil through the dipstick port, leaving about a half a quart. he then filled with 6 quarts of oil, leaving it a bit high (6.1 capacity). also when changing the filter, he let a considerable amount of oil drip down into the pan and did not clean it up. this explained the "leak" when first tilting the engine. they ran the computer on it, which produced no error codes.

so i get my baby back tonight. didn't even miss her. now plan to write a nice letter to the owner thanking my salesman and the service manager for their efforts.

salesman met me right on time last night. launched my boat and fired her up. idle was right at 750 (and i thought it was quiet before!). oil level right at the full mark, engine nice and clean. thanked him again, and took her home. really shifts well now, no thumps or hard shifts.

i think that's the happy ending to a great boat purchase. need to go fish now.
