Could be anything from a faulty switch to a bad power pack...

To really check the ignition system you need a service manual so you know the steps and what wire leads are used to test various componants with a volt/ohm meter...

Re: 1979 50 HP Johnson

Well there is no spark at the plugs... and I don't find power at the coils. And there is two wires leading from something that feeds the coils..( don't know what it is) to a switch on the dash that is sealed in a redish plastic.. that again I have no idea about. I'd like to learn and know what these things are and try to fix it myself so I know what's what. This is my first boat motor.

In addition to the previous post one of the two wire leading up to the dash switch just goes back to the motor and is grounded. that confuses me.

That "something" would be the power pack..

Just for kicks, disconnect that grounded wire, then see if you have spark...

Anywhoo.. If you want to learn, pick up a service manual for your motor... It'd be the best $$ you can spend.. You might also try a local library.. Often times you will find librarys have service manuals for various items such as outboard motors, cars, lawnmowers, ect..... ;)

Ok I've tried disconnecting the ground wire as suggested... Still doesn't fire, But I took that power pack thing out now and am going to see if it can be tested at a shop.I'm not home from work in time to take the whole boat in.
