i am getting my evinrude 15 hp 1989 ready for fishing.

i changed the plugs gaped at 030 put new fuel new bottom end oil, all was going good untill i put it in a old steel barell to try and see if it was runing ok. I got it going after a lot of pulling the water poured out of the back port water jet no problem, but as it ran for awhile it must have sucked up some rust and dirt, the water slowed to a trickle, so i brought it to the lake and tried it there, it ran perfect, but the water wasent coming out to fast , so i took the tube of inside the motor and blew it out, the water started flowing again, so i took it for a ride at full power, but i felt the top part of the leg and it was very hot to the touch is this ormal because it is were the exast port is coming out, or am i in trouble ?

Hi Pitbull,<br /><br />How hot is very hot? Could you keep your hand on it, or did you have to lift it off quick?<br /><br />And by top part of the leg, do you mean just under the motor?<br /><br />If you can keep your hand on that area, then you're probably not in trouble - assuming the water volume at the pee hole is healthy.

yes it gets hot but i can keep my hand on it , it wont burn my hand but it is hot at full throtle, and it is the part that is not in the water right by the ezaust hole that gets hot but only when i am goung full tilt? is this normal the water is flowing out pretty good , now that some of the crap came out that i sucked up in the dirty 45 gallon drum.

You might want to check your thermostat to see if it is clogged also.

Pitbull,<br /><br />Been away - sorry I didn't reply before.<br />Reckon you don't have a problem.<br /><br />That hot sounds about right. And the motor now runs right. So thrash it a bit on the water, and clear out any remaining crud. As long as you get a steady little stream fronm your pee hole, you should be OK.<br /><br />Catch some fish!

ok thanks alot for the info, REELSPORT and stillfishing, i will take out the thermostat and see if there is any dirt in there, if i can find it?

going fishing Thursday, hope this motor dont let me down never has before but i never cleaned the thermostat yet not sure how, or were it is lol, 1989 evinrude 15hp
