First let me state I know little about motors so please excuse the simple questions.
I just purchased a nice 1974 starcraft (exellent condition) with a 1977 70 hp evinrude outboard and notice the motor doesnot have the small jet of water coming out of the motor like my smaller evinrude. I decided to look into the motor and found that there was no hose connected to the hole where I assumed the jet of water would come out. Is this normal not to have ?
I have started and run the motor several times(20 minutes each time) and it ran great and actually started better then my other outboard.
Please let me know how to check the water pump - remeber Im all thumbs with this stuff.
Any info would helpfull.

I also found a strange thing bolted to the motor next to the center spark plug with a wire going to the front of the boat but no connection. It seems to be actually held against the motor by a small bracket.

Welcome to iboats. Are you saying the hose is just missing or there is no nozzle on the pan for a telltale?

my 77 V4 Evinrude has no "pisser" as you'll hear mentioned in other topics. Does your exhaust housing between motor and lower unit have two small round holes in the rear? they are relief ports and water spray will come out of them if yours has them.

I have a picture of a 3-cylinder in my book and there's some sort of a connector right above the spark plug. it's a wiring harness of some sort that I see. There also a temp sensor wire running through there also, is the wire tan?

There's also what looks like a water return hose running down the side of head in the picture, affixed with clamps. Hope some of this helps

Folks who are "all thumbs" need a Service Manual even worse than some of the know-it-alls, Reddog.

Mike, the wire is white although im sure it has been replaced because the motor was suppose to have been rebuilt a few years back.
I hear from another person it may be a temp. sensor on the back of the motor , it has 1 white wire .I also noticed a red and a white wire coming out of the controls that has been cut off.

The motor does have 2 small holes that do spray some .

JB - I guess ill try ebay for that manual - Ive only had the boat a few days so I havent had time to get one.

Ive run the motor several time for 20 minutes each time and I did put my hand on the side of the motor and it did get hot to touch(not burning hot) when it first started running but then went to a warm to mild temp.

I guess I should ask this question - Is there a way to be sure the water pump is working correctly before I take it out ?\
Id hate to burn up my motor.
I plan on getting it checked by a repairman however theres a long wait with the warmer weather.

And also need a basic Owner's Manual which are usually available from the same sources that sell factory service manuals.

For OP: check the mastertechmarine.com site for original owner's manuals. I've bought one for each of my old engines (a 82 Johnny and 74 merc) and find them very valuable for basic owner-non mechanic use. The factory service manual is handy if you want to actually repair things. The generic (e.g. Seloc) service manuals, I've found, are a little better for lay-person trouble shooting, but not as valuable as factory manual for the actual fixing.

reddog, from the wiring diagram I'm looking at the red wire that I found runs from the rectifier to the terminal block found on motor, and from there to the starter solenoid. The white wire that I found is part of the neutral start switch, in which if that's the case be careful and make double sure that you don't have the motor in gear when starting or tinkering. There is a purple and red wire also from the ignition switch....
