The VRO is not adjustable, what type oil are you using?

Re: 89 johnson VRO

i am using johnson 2 cycle it is defiently over oiling because after a few hours of fishing when we pull the boat out of the water the transom is brown right at the water line. but i haven't had any plugs go bad yet and when we open it up it will smoke heavy just for a second then at full speed no smoke. if there is a fix to this that would be great because is sure make it tought fishing smelling that smoke all day

Hi J 90, That sound awful normal to me. My '89 Johnson 70(VRO2) smokes while trolling and runs great on plane. After I put it in the garage, the next morning there is black goo running down the skeg and puddled on the floor. When it stops doing this THEN I'll worry.

Re: 89 johnson VRO

I'm about the farthest thing from any kind of expert, but I've heard that small leaks in your fuel line and/or fittings upstream from the VRO can cause the VRO to over-oil. The way I understand it, you get an "aerated" column of fuel coming into the VRO, causing it to pulse more frequently and this richens up the oil/fuel ratio. They say not to use zip ties or even the metal screw type hose clamps, but rather use the plastic, ratcheting OEM hose clamps. Hopefully someone here will correct me if I'm wrong.
