Do ya think fogging oil fouled my plugs?

Started the Evinrude twin last night and although it did start easily, it ran very rough. Got the typical clouds of smoke from fogging last fall. It sounded like it was running on one cylinder, so I pulled the plug wire while running motor and plenty of spark at both boots. Then like a switch was thrown, it would run on both cylinders erratically. I took out plugs, cleaned with carb cleaner, and it ran good and ilded after that.

Just wondering if the fogging oil can foul out good plugs with just one season or if I have more serious problem.

Motor & carbs were rebuilt for last season. Stored by fogging, and adding stabilizer to gas.

I'm going to pick up new plugs on way home to be safe and run motor again before leaving on vacation early Saturday morning.

IT's possible do a fast compression check to ease your mind and fresh gas and new plugs may solve the problem

Not a bad idea to check compression. I was afraid the powerpack might be going the way it was acting. Fuel problems usually don't have that instant rpm change that an ignition problem can give, that's why I checked the plugs and spark.

PS, even with insulated handle pliers, I could feel the current passing through me when I pulled the boots off the plugs. Of course I was standing in a big puddle of water and the tell tale is shooting water all over my shoes. LOL! I'll assume that means I have good spark from the power packs.

FYI... I picked up two new plugs and two spark plug wire kits on way home. Installed it all and motor started right up and ran smoooooth.

I am surprised because the old plugs did not look bad. They are Champion L77JC4 and I put in Champion QL78YC. The L77JC4 is the plug specified for extended high speed use, but that is not how I use the motor. So I put in the standard range plug QL78YC. I'll see how it runs on that plug for a few days.

I also found one wire had a torn boot. Fresh wires can only help.

Re: Do ya think fogging oil fouled my plugs?

When I worked at a Kaw dealer in the 70's we had to replace the plugs when doing a 'new motor service' [ preping a new motorcycle to sell ]. the plugs only had a few minutes of run time from the factory but they used some sort of fogging oil and the plugs would foul almost instantly so new ones were specified.

New plugs at the start of every season makes sense to me. When I was racing bikes I put in a new plug before every moto . Pretty stupid to let a $2.00 plug cost you gas money , entry fees , etc.

Update on the plugs:

When I took the boat out over the weekend it ran really well. Much better with the normal use Champion QL78YC than the extended WOT use L77JC4. Probably because I don't run WOT for too long, but I do run mid throttle for an hour or more straight.

A shot power pack will certainly change RPM's instantly. Mine went from fast idle to zero when the pp went out. Started it up again, it ran for about 5 sec. and never hit another lick.

BoatBouy,

That is good to know. It's a big help when folks post their experience with problems, symptoms and solutions. Too often only the problem is posted and the resolution is not.
