Oil in Fuel Tank

Last weekend I attempted to take my boat (2000 Johnson 90hp) out. It wouldn't start. I checked the fuel tank & found what appeared to be oil in the tank. This engine has the oil injection system. Is there any way for the oil to enter the fuel tank from the oil injection system. If not..I suspect my nephew used my boat & didn't realize the VRO was there & mixed oil w/ the gas.
Thanks for the help!

Welcome!!

It could bypass back to the fuel side of the pump. Was the oil tank empty? Even if there was 50:1 in the tank the motor should run.

The tank had about 6 gals. in it. I drained the tank & put "clean" fuel back in it then changed the plugs & it then started. Should I be concerned about the bypass possiblitly? It seems to be ruuing good now.

Yes, thats something to check out. A dealer has the gauges to check the pump. If its transfering fuel and oil back & forth, you could end up pumping too little or no oil.

Re: Oil in Fuel Tank

Might be too simple a question - but how old was the fuel?
