Hydroelectric shifting .... Did I fix it?

I had to rig my shifting circuit due to a bad stock switch that was orginally flipped by the throttle arm. I used two auto relays to create the logic to feed the required voltages to the two wires for the shifting solenoids. I also had a power switch that powered the relays. With no power the tranny defaults to forward, luckily. With the power on it would not shift into forward or reverse. It sounded like it was trying to go into gear but would not fully engage and would kill the engine. I could shut the power off to my shifting circuit and it would default to forward. I changed the LU fluid with the recommended premium blend as was in it before. I ran the engine on the muffs in my driveway and the shifting circuit seemed to work fine. Could a lower unit lube change have fixed my problem or should I anticipate the problem again once the boat is in the water?? I changed the fluid a good 24hours after I ran the engine. It was the color of coffee with a lot of cream ;) but no water preceded the oil when I drained it.

Any thoughts???

That is what oil looks like when water gets mixed in it. You need to keep a close eye on it. Those old electric shifts will not shift with diluted oil in the LU.

Is there a LU seal kit for a 1971 60hp or do I need to pick them all up seperatley? I checked the iboats store and they are listed by part numbers, and I'm not for sure what I need. Any help on which one I need would be appreciated.

Thanks
Karrick

I found a seal kit here PN 2690 for $26.14 but it claims it is for a 2cyl 60hp johnny
70-71 model...I assumed that the 60hp engines were all 3cyl???

If yours is a 1971 3-cylinder 60hp, the Sierra part numbers are 18-2001 for the propshaft seals and 18-2059 for the driveshaft seals. According to the application list from Sierra, you need 2 of each part.

I hope that helps. You should be able to order those parts here on iboats. You can also get them at any NAPA dealer that stocks Sierra Marine parts.

I would like to order a kit with all the LU seals, waterpump seals etc cuz it might be cheaper that way and I might need to replace them the next impellar change. Would a kit PN include the above listed part numbers 2001 and 2059 x2???

CA,

Where did you find the Sierra application list you speak of?

Thanks
K

You can go to sierramarine.com. They have their entire catalog online. You can order sierra parts here on iboats if you have the part number. Lots of other sources for Sierra parts, as well. They're good for seals, tune-up kits, and carb kits for older johnnyrudes.

be sure to take note of how the seals come out if i am correct there are 2 seals behind the prop and 2 seals under the water pump impeller and should be put in so the seals are back to back instead of being put in the same direction
