i just took my erude in for a tune up and they told me i have 155 lbs compression in the top and 80 lbs in the bottom should i get it rebuilt or is it worth it or could it be something else.
it was running great this summer then it lost performance instantly.
i have allready spent a fair bit of money on this motor, starter, fuel pump, thermostat, impellar, and i just bought a new foot ,impellar, wear pad (1000.00)just for the foot and wear pad. need some good advise.does anyone know how long a rebuid would last,or should i just buy new and cut my losses.

I would do a decarb, then check the compression myself before I did anything else, Louie.

Good luck. :)

Re: 55horse erude 1976

j.b.
i read your repl to late and spent the money on a 2005 6o horse merc jet if you could tell me a little more i might just rebuild the erude for my son it is an outboard jet as well so it is suseptible to overreving, i bought it last year the guy said it was rebuilt but the gaskets have factory paint so i dont think it was
i paid 2500 and put 1500 in to it so i would like to fix
the guys at the merc boat shop said you need to find parts and its getting hard to do so the parts are after market parts.
it is a 1976 erude 55 horse with a jet pump my new one has a rev limiter and i accidently ran over a beaverdam going downstream yesterday it never overreved but the erude probly would have
thanks to any who reply

Re: 55horse erude 1976

from what i have read on here i trust your opinion j.b.
you seem very knowledgable in the outboards the erude ran fine for about 150 kms this summer sounded great then lost half its power one day and it had allways sucked the primer ball flat but never sounded starved for fuel
allso i was mixing the oil to rich for the first 200 kms i ran the boat i was putting 1 litre to 1 five gallon jug of gas
but mixed it propperly for the last 150 to 200 kms the erude did 44 kph downstream in the river and my 60 horse merc jet does 60-65 kph downstream in the same river.
thanks again

If your primer bulb was getting sucked flat then you need to open your vent on the gas tank.

thanks fireman but im trying to get info on the motor rebuild the fuel was never a problem just a symptom i was wanting to know if these older engines are really worth rebuilding and if my son could trust an older motor. and allso how often are they assumed to be blown and just need to be cleaned up.

I would bet that you can replace it with good used cheaper than a rebuild. If you do it yourself get an OEM manual, you won't regret it. JB or Dhadley will see this and can give you better advice. At worst, it bumps you back to the top!

what info ya want? most all engines are very reliable. but "accidental" beaverdam incidents can kill the best of them. as can lack of yearly cooling system maint as can forgetting to open the fuel tank vent. yes the closed vent can smoke a piston. 2 strokes are very intolerant of lean air/fuel mixes and cylinder temps. most engines I see die are customer neglect issues not engine failures. just the way life is. your statement about fuel not being a problem just a symptom is reversed. most times a mechanical failure is a symptom of a problem. but post any rebuild questions and we can try to answer them. if the motor in question is not a saltwater monster and the rebuild is a rebuild not a patch job it should last many years or until a "beaver dam" incident. here we dont have beaver dams but we do have a lot of thin water and thick mud. most outboards survive the grounding but die when the operator tries to power off the mudbank.
