Had no reply on my previous question, so I will try again. I still cant get my motor to run the way it should. It starts up when i prime but dies on me within seconds. If i then reprime it floods. After a while the motor will run but not nice at all. I have broken down the carbs 4 times and used a good carb cleaner and blown it out with compressed air. All this does not solve my problem. Is it also very expensive to overhall the motor ??

First, kevin, you did have replys.

Please supply the model number of your engine.

Do you have a Service Manual? You should not attempt to service an outboard without one.

Have you done a compression check?

Have you tested the fuel pump?

Do you have a water seperating filter on your fuel line?

Re: johnson 90hp v4

That is a 1986 engine, Kevin.

Can you be more specific on the compression numbers?

Yes, it is worth stripping and rebuilding that engine, IF it needs rebuilding. If it does not need rebuilding it would be a waste of time and Euros.

"Expensive" is a relative term. It would be a lot less expensive than replacing the engine.

You have three carburetors. The probability that all three have the same fault is remote. Your engine should be able to start and "run" on one carb with no load.

I strongly recommend both an Owner's Manual and a Service Manual. The OM might cause what seems a minor change in your starting technique, and the SM might well keep you from destroying your engine.

Good luck. :)

jb,

i think this is a v4 we are talking about.so only 2 carbs.

kevin mix some fuel 50:1 and fill a plantsprayer.
take the silencer cover off from the carb and let somebody crank the motor while you are spraying gas into the carb intakes.
if this keeps the motor running check your fuelpump or look for kinked fuelhose.
also check the vent of your gastank.

good luck
