I've taken off the throttle grip, and the shaft going to the elbow that has the 'Star cluster of gears' attached at the elbow. I've been squirting penetrating oil down its throat, to the engine housing for awhile with no success. I cannot free up the shaft going into the engine which I assumes throttles gas and shifts gears Anyone had this problem? Any suggestions? My stern is getting barnacles, my boat too. Welcome Butch!

After removing the tiller handle, that leaves the gear on the motor that mates with the tiller handle gear. Look to the back of that gear where it goes through the hole. There is a large snap ring that holds it in the hole with a large washer to take up the slop. Remove the snap ring and push the gear out. This will let you remove the connecting link to the tower shaft gear and clean this much up. Are you with me so far?

OBJ, Much thanks for your reply and help. I'm with you so far.. BB OBJ, I've relaeased the snap rine and 'slop washer, they slid down the protective hollow shaft toward the engine. I still cannot loosen anything, the star Gear that surrounds the end of what looks like the end of a plastic shaft, has a little play only. I don't know what should separate from what? Thanks..........BB I hope your getting this.

OBJ-----------I bought a manual lasst week just for this problem, Clymer, 2-40 Outboard 1973-90. Not one mention of the tiller, gears or shaft. I did manage to release the ring and still can't wiggle anything out. Should I still be still with you OBJ

Had to catch up here Butch.

With the snap ring lose, the gear will or should push out towards the tiller handle. The tiller handle should be folded all the way up as far as it will go so the gears will clear. If the large gear is stuck in the hole, you might try some light tapping from the rear (snap ring end) and soaking in some PB Blaster while moving the gear as much as you can. This might get the Blaster down in around the gear. Never seen one stuck this tight. We still on the same page?

Clymers ain't real good about stuff like this. Only the OEM manuals will tell ya' what you need to know.

Might be a silly question, but is it the shaft that's stuck, or is it the gearshift mechanism that the shaft is attached to?

Have you released the two links at the motor end of the shaft?

Stillfishing,
good 'catch', maybe I mis-spoke. The shaft going from the throttle grip to the elbow of the tiller is well removed, it's the gear shaft going to the motor I'm having trouble with. I've taken off the snap ring and washer under the star type gear, but nothinbg seems to loosen up.
Thank u both for trolling for my answer. BB

BB,

That's the sgaft I was referring to - the motor end, not the tiller handle end. That shaft is attached to two ball links that work the forward/reverse gears and throttle. I was trying to sort out if you had disconnected these links. If you have, then the problem is isolated to the shaft itself. If you haven't, then the problem just could be with the gear select mechanism. Doubtful, but possible. Salt is a real gremlin!

I've got no magic wand on this - just penetrating oil, gentle heat and patience.

Re: Salt frozen shaft on 77', 15 HP Evin.

That's a good thought Ciao....Butch, there is an arm from under the flywheel that connects to the tower shaft on the starboard side of the engine. If you remove the cotter pin and pop the arm off the tower shaft, you can see if the "magneto" plate under the flywheel is free. That will at least either cancel out the mag plate as the problem or it will find the problem. Put the engine in gear to release the low idle stop (think I called that right) so you can move the plate around.
