Hi guys,

In addition to this forum, I've also stumbled across several others that also seem to be large, active and somewhat international:

ybw
thehulltruth
boatingabc
boated

Any opinions on how these differ? Are any of these more active, more constructive, more technical, or more inclusive? Is there a large degree of overlap in users, or do users tend to choose one forum and stick with it?

I've got to say, though, that the people here at iboats have been very friendly and helpful to me so far. Thanks guys.

Re: Which forum is better?

I'm familiar with thehulltruth and boatingabc as I frequent both of them, as do several of the users on this board. All are good...just depends on what you are looking for. Thehulltruth is more of a saltwater fishing crowd while boatingabc is more like iboats in that it seems to be frequented by folks who use the inland rivers and lakes. Just my opinion.

Like this board, there is a broad knowledge base and lots of people who are willing to try and help.

Re: Which forum is better?

One major difference between iboats and boatingabc, at least from where I am, is in the online response & update time. Although apparently powered by the same type of software, the iboats server seems a lot quicker in responding. Might just be a function of location and routing, though.

I go to the 4th one at times, I find that a lot of the questions there may be leaning towards larger boats/cruisers whereas here you get a wide assortment. You don't have to pay at that site to get access to most of it, it's strictly voluntary. Of course this forum is the best I've come across!! :D

Seems to me from my observation that #4 is full of hoity-toity country club / yacht clubber types.

I feel more comfortable here as most seem to be average "Joe's" just trying have a little on the water.

That and Bondo is my hero! ;)

I frequent boatingabc a lot. Not as much engine/outdrive technical knowledge on there as on here, especially compared to the mercruiser section where bondo, dons, tommays, and rodbolt lurk. Bondo's experience is definately out of the ordinary, I assure you all. There is an industry insider there that posts photos of boat construction & stuff, and it's fun to see what's out there. All in all boatingabc is a great bulletin board.
I wish trailerboats was more active, but Kcook can't be everywhere at once!

TilliamWe - TBM used to be a lot more active, but many of their members migrated over to BABC. There is also some serious talent on GBA, but very little traffic there.

Kelly

K, I am one of those that has "migrated" too!

Ken, you just made the mistake of "attacking" Bones on ABC, and got flamed pretty bad for it.
But if you are looking for hardcore tech info, this is the place to be.

Re: Which forum is better?

I hung out on BoatABC and THT before "landing" here. THT guys are nice, but their stuff is out of my league. Lately here and Trailerboats is the only forums for me...

THT is the best for saltwater boats and offshore fishing. Very experienced people there, some Old Salts. iboats is more freshwater and alot of ski/pleasure boating topics. I personally think iboats has a better engine mechanical section, with categories for different manufacturers. I use both forums.

HeadHunt

i like it here better. there's more traffic and more well-informed people. i always got the feeling i was talking to judge schmails on boatered.

babc isn't too bad but it seems to mostly be i/o owners and tubers, neither of which apply to me.

boatered seems to geared more to the 30 foot and up crowd, seem like nice enough people, if you need advice on the best tender for your 70 foot Silverton. Bye the way, does anyone know what the hell 2 footitst is ? They all midgets over there? :D

Jim

Re: Which forum is better?

I've been here from the start of these iboat forums when all the posts were grouped into 2 or 3 categories and we might have received 10 or so total posts a day. Iboats has grown from a few hundred users to well over 50 thousand. Heck, I even remember when JB joined the group :)

I've been to the other forums too. Sometimes you need to throw a question to as many people as you can to get a quick response. Each other board has their good and bad points but when it comes down to the sheer magnitude of available knowledge on almost all brands, you can't beat the knowledge bank here at Iboats. Additionally, people here seem to actually want to help and not just puff up their chests and brag about their knowledge and equipment. The person with the 90k fishing boat actually respects the input from a guy with a $900 tinny. You dont always find this on the other boards. We are a true community.

Nav

Re: Which forum is better?

YBW is produced in England by the publishers of Motor Boat and Yachting (which is a fantastic magazine!). The forum is extremely poor in my opinion. I used to go there until I discovered iboats. YBW isn't in the same league. There isn't a fraction of the info that is available here. It's also dominated by people who hog the board, have really expensive boats and put off new posters. I could rant all day about YBW. Skip it, or have a look to see how rubbish it is.
