I'm looking to buy a Crestliner 1850 Sportfish but I was very concerned with the MAX Capacity weight limit.

Basically, when I put on the outboard, troll motor and kicker, loaded my fishing gear and filled the fuel and livewells I was left with 78lbs. CANT get in the boat

Tuesday I talked to Crestliner cust. serv. and the rep told me that the Max. Cap. # DOES NOT include the motor, fuel and water in the livewells. He said they figure the capacity AFTER the largest outboard the boat is rated for is installed and the tanks are full.

That leaves me plenty :) Is this True?

Re: Is this TRUE ?

Sounds about right...if you look at the capacity on the boat should read maximum ? persons or ? persons and gear. This is the amount of people and gear you can add after boat has engine fuel battery etc.

Jim

Yes, figure any trolling motors, batteries for the trolling motor, kickers/w gas, fishing gear etc.
Most important on large bodies of water. 3 200 pound guys, fishing eq. trolling motor etc will push 800 to 900 poounds approx.

Re: Is this TRUE ?

This is a topic I have interest in. My boat has a max cap. of 5 on the plate, but if my two kids each have a friend out, then we would have 6 and my kids are small enough that I would in no way exceed the max cap.

I bought the Seloc manual for my engine (OMC Manual was unavailable) and in the safety section it says that the data plates are only recommended capacities set by the manufacturer with the guidelines of the Coast Guard. Basically follow them but they are only recommended capacities and you can do whatever you want, but of course you should follow them.

My state boating regulations states that the data plates should be followed (of course) and it may be unlawful if they are not. It is kind of unclear on that.

Not trying to hijack this thread as I feel this is related, but what are you guys thoughts on the persons part of the data plates?

Thanks
Jeff

Re: Is this TRUE ?

Weight capacity should be the first concern. The number of persons however is part of that figure. If the plate says five people, and each weights 150 pounds, thats 750 pounds. If you have four 200 pounders, thats 800. Here's the text from the owners manual for a 2004 Alumacraft Navigator.
"Boats up to 26' in the National Marine Manufactures Association (NMMA) program have a maximum rated load capacity, which is stated on the certification plate. The load capacity of boats under 20' are determined by the USCG. The person/load capacity is determined by various USCG formulas. Actual capacity is determined by availability of proper seating on the boat. Acceptable seating determines the number of passengers, not the overal load capacity." They show a sample plate (in this case for a V170) that says "4 persons or 815 pounds. 1365 pounds persons, motor, gear". If you study the numbers in this example, four 200 pound individuals would leave room for a 15 pound child (if there was a place to sit. Weight of the engine, batteries, fuel and gear would be limited to 450 pounds. Those are the numbers that add up fast.

Cool! I have seating for 8. I wouldn't put that many in the boat, but maybe would go 1 or to over my 5 persons on the plate. Everytime I've ever been stopped they made sure there was an readily accessible PFD for everyone on board and never even checked the plate.

Re: Is this TRUE ?

Thanx to all of you who posted.

Seems completely illogical that the Max Cap. # included the Motor, fuel, water, etc because you could not get in the boat.

Wounder what the insurance co would say?

Do they cancel ins if you are over the max including the motor, fuel ... ???

Re: Is this TRUE ?

Different companies must have different methods of rating. My plate says "max hp 50, max capcity 4 persons OR 1150 for persons, motor and gear".

I have to keep in mind that my boat gets a little heavier every year with accessories so I have to re-calculate what it will safely hold from time to time.
