Hello Everyone,

First I would like to thank everyone on this board for helping my husband and I fix several problems we have had. :) We have gone from not running at all and trim problems to running with problems lol. Saved quite a bit of money so far as well. Here is the issue at hand:

Boat sat for 2 years. We have cleaned carbs well with rebuild kit. Brand new battery. Drained tank and added fresh fuel mixture 50:1 and have run about 3 tanks full through it. New primer bulb and lines in and out. Primer bulb exploded first time in water. New plugs. Checked fuel filter seems fine. At first would only run at like 5 mph. Have done a lync and sync...but still doenst seem right, doenst want to plane out. Finally does after a bit and will run but doenst seem like its getting all of its HP. Then after dropping to an idle it will bog down and die just about everytime. It has a hard time starting. After messing with it for a while on the water such as spraying carb spray into carbs, and priming bulb it will run sometimes or not, but eventually do the same thing again. Or, we try to start it so much that we have a dead battery. Bulb seems to stay hard most of time. I have read so many posts here and cant seem to find a fix. The tank is a built in tank and was very full of sludgy gas. Im wondering if the tank might still have some sludge getting in lines even after running 3 tanks of gas thru it. Maybe a power problem? Drinks gas like a V8 engine too :( It has two lines coming from it, both have been replaced. Vent is open. We just cant figure this out and would sure appreciate any help or advice so we can be in the water on the 4th :)

Im a woman so forgive me if I sound dumb when explaining this. :) P.S. Cursing at it doesnt help lol

sounds like the same problem i had on one of my Mercury's... turned out the be the timing advance arm on my linkage where the idle stop skew was broken... I'm no expert, just sharing an experience. $5 part kept me off the lake for 2 weeks.

First of all, welcome to iboats. I think that the majority here will advise you to get rid of the sludgy gas and clean the tank well. How can your gas be sludgy from sitting if you have run three tankfuls through the engine? If you ran crap through these carbs it's time to clean them again. Next time you are out running when it bogs check for spark on all cylinders. It doesn't cost anything and will eliminate this as the problem.

Thanks for the welcome. Hubby has checked that problem. What I meant about the sludgy gas...that was in it when we got the boat. It poured out like shrek slime. We have since run 3 tanks of fresh gas through. It was just a thought that maybe the tank is still a bit cruddy or something.

Thanks LakeBacon..there isnt anything broken anywhere it seems lol.

I forgot to mention that the last time we were on the water running wide open the RPM'S shot up real high and instantly we had a warning horn -constant beep. We shut it down immediately. Either an overheat or fuel problems? That was the first time this has happened. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

instantly we had a warning horn -constant beep. We shut it down immediately.

Constant buzzer is overheat warning. Good job shutting her down. Watch the pee stream coming out the back of the motor, and make sure its good and strong. Sometimes bits of debree clog up the little rubber hose.

I agree with others - if you haven't inspected inside of tank, do so. My boat sat for 3 years, and I am only just now getting some of the crap out. It ate the VRO diaghram. (If yours has a regular fuel pump, check the diaphragm). I ended up putting adding a fuel filter after the pump to catch the extra rubber bits. Carbs on and off several times, and so on. Finally ran well yesterday, though. Patience and persistence wins.

Thanks Z

Well Ill have to ask about regular vs VRO. Would it run well fast with a bad fuel pump? When it does get going, it goes. He says it wasnt hot when we shut her off on top..hmmm Today the blasted thing turned over great on the muffs and we checked the tank. It seems all is fine with it, I mean it looks old and we cant see all the way into it. All lines are brand new. Something we noticed was the clutch..adjusted that a bit and it seemed to have needed it giving us more RPMS. It turned over perfectly with no extra effort after sitting for a few days. Today for the first time though we noticed that the pisser was not pouring like normal just a very fast drip and some water in bottom of engine. I noticed on the back of the engine plate thing where the bolts are on both sides that one looked barely leaky. The water all leaked out thru the pisser but is this a problem or should I just tighten this bolt up and lube it? I did have a smaller water hose hose attached to muffs. Adjusting the clutch along with the linkage again really seemed to help. And there is a part, ok laugh at me but it is the rubber looking piece at the very end top of the linkage cable that occssaionly is slipping out... Maybe it is just from adjusting it so much. Could this be the idle stop skew Lakebacon mentioned? There has always been quite a bit of play with the remote handle, at least two inches or so till the clutch engages. Is this right? Itt is beeter since adjusting it. Still doesnt seem right, we dont have a manual yet. We are rookies but learning as we go and trying to save money, Im enjoying it to be honest. Gonna head to the water again tomorrow evening to test it out. It seems everything we have done has improved this boat so Im not giving up and you are right patience and persistance does win. :) And this forum rocks!
