Motor Starting Problem

I have a 1997 Johnson 175 OceanRunner Outboard motor. Currently I am having difficulty in getting the motor started. When it does start, the motor will perform perfectly, however, after putting the boat away for a week or so, the motor will not start. If I change my plugs, the engine will start; it will be sluggish at first, but will idle fine after a few moments.<br /><br />Before I change the plugs, I notice the threads are wet. Any suggestions will be appreciated.<br /><br />Paul

What is your cold start procedure? It should be the below:<br /><br />1. Pump up primer bulb until hard<br />2. Turn key on, not to start, just on<br />3. Push key in for 8 seconds, count it out<br />4. Then turn key to start<br /><br />Engine should start within 2 or 3 seconds of cranking, if your primer is working properly. The engine has a feature called Quick Start and doing this starting procedure will initiate this feature, it advances the timing for easier cold starts.

Thanks for the info. When I bought the boat (used;my first boat), I failed to enquire about the cold start procedure, and the previous owner did not demonstrate. Anyway, I will try that this evening. I was just pushing the key in and turning it on - in my profession we call this a ID 10T error.
