Hi All, I have just come into ownership of what i think is a 1970's / 80's short shaft Seabird Johnson 10hp outboard(ex-military). But can only find these numbers on it and can't find its year.
One number is C0031826 and the other numbers are part numbers on the carb 312910 (upper part by choke) and 309726 (lower chamber).
We have srtipped and cleaned it and done the plug change etc. So now we have a good spark and fuel getting to the carb.
It will fire and run at mac ten for about 5/10 seconds then just stop(it has backfired once). Then when we try again it wont start for about five minutes.
Is this the fast/slow running speed dial that needs turning. Any help would be great even if it just to tell me the years of it or make of carb so i can research that. Cheers

Re: What age Johnson/ fuel problem

was it fogged last time it was stored? I have heard that if too much fogger is used when u store a motor, the excess build up with have that effect once it is heated. By effect i mean you can start the motore and run it, but after shutdown not be able to start it. Can anyone back me up on that?? Because if thats the case, they do sell stuff to anti-fog an engine.

Re: What age Johnson/ fuel problem

Fogging is when you spray fogging oil into the cylinders prior to storage. It helps protect against rust and corrosion during seasonal storage periods. Helps protect metal surfaces (cylinder walls, pistons, rings, valve guides, and intake system components) against moisture and humidity. Displaces water to help prevent damage from moisture accumulation.

Unfortunately i don;t know of any brand names off hand. I think that your best bet would be to go to an autoparts store and ask for it. Im sure they could find it for you.
