Old Johnson cooling problem

I have A QD-19 10 Hp that has been in the family since it was new. <br />I replace the water pump impeller after checking the operation on a barrel found the dicharge water to be real hot. I may have turned the tips on the impeller in the wrong direction? Will this make a difference in the volume of water pumped. Is it possible to install the impeller wronged.

It won't make any difference at all. As soon as you fire up the motor the impeller will right itself.<br /><br />Great motor - hope you're running it with a 24:1 mixture... Also, keep an eye on the lower unit oil. If there's any evidence of water intrusion, consider installing a seal kit. Those units work well, but won't take a ton of abuse due to their being a mildly beefed up 5.5hp unit.<br /><br />- Scott

If I'm not mistaken, your '58 should have a thermostat. If so, the discharge water ought to be pretty hot.<br />You can tell if it's got a thermostat because there will be a plate held on by three screws on the top of the head. Under that plate is the 'stat.

I have not had a chance to check, but I'm sure your are right. Just runturn from three days in Quebec. The motor ran grate only one or two pulls to start. <br />Water temp was warm under wide open throttle which seamed right. Thanks for the help. Keep your flies dry.

Scott<br /> Just returned from three days in Quebec fishing. The motor ran great. It did have a spell when it slowed during full throttle an back fired three time and the strighten out and ran fine. Must of been a little dirt or slug someplace. It will start with one pull with the chocke on when cold. I have a small leak in the fuel tank and if I do'nt pump it up it takes two maybe three before it will start.<br />I am using a 32:1 oil mix with TC-W3. There is no smoke at high speed and very little during idle.<br />I had water in the lower unit and found the Seals and O-ring to fit the drive shaft and shift lever rod. The **** rod was leakink. The fix was to increase the pressure in the O-ring by driving the brass bushing in a little more.<br />The motor runs great I would like it to idle slower but thats just me. You know, would like to be able to count the nummer of times the engine fires at ilde. <br />Thanks for the help and advice. Remember to keep yuor files dry.<br /><br /> Ron
