Grounding wire on gas tank

I just bought a boat with a 1983 70hp Johnson. There is a wire from the gas tank neck to the negative terminal on the battery. Why is this wire here?

Welcome to iboats. :) <br /><br />That's to help prevent static from blowing you up. The tank is similarly grounded if it's metal, not if it's plastic. Although there's usually a ground to the gas gauge sender, depending on the style.
