I have a 1972 50hp Johnson outboard, model 5ESL72C that appears to be stuck in gear, will not go into neutral. I have checked the solonoids, checked the switch, and am unsure what type of oil was in it. I read pieces regarding the diode. Does anyone have any diagrams locating this, or diagrams/schematics of the lower unit? What are possible causes to this problem? Thanks for the help.

it neds power to the solonoids when it cranks o even in a fast spinn to pull the nutral solonoids. it will stay in foward gear if no power . the oil is a special oil you will need to git from a dealer . the foot has a pump in it and it want work with regular foot grease . if reg . foot greas has ben addd put some transmishon fluid in it and to clean it out . the oil normaley used is as thin as trannie fluid but doesent have detergent in it .

Thanks for the responses! Basscat1...I have emailed you. Papasage, yes that is what the motor looks like. This motor did in fact, sit up for several years and when the lever is in neutral the motor goes into forward. Responses can also be sent to email at wfglosson@yahoo.com . I appreciate any and all the help on this.
