I have a 25hp evenrude on a 14' Anchore craft,
I beleave the engine is also about a 72 also.
its modle # is 25253. The problem I'am having is, engine seems to idle smooth, sounds and runs great. Had it out a few times it ran great. Last couple times it ran good until I put it in forward and raised the rpm's it started jumping. like a bumping feel. bought a new prop. same thing, Changed the fuel same thing. could this be a tilt problem. I'am really raw at the boating thing. but I love fishing and want to get out there. The times I'v been out, I'v loved it. Don't seem to bump as much at lower throttle. But throttle up and bumpey bump. like it's jumping in and out of gear, or something. Side note, I have broken a couple shear pins. ??

First welcome to Iboats.
What you discribe sounds like the clutch dog is bad. Some have had luck with pulling the lower unit and turning the gears around (swaping forward and reverse gear and turning the clutch dog 180*) don'tknow if that will work on yours.

Hey thanks for the response. Are lower units very easy to repair, and or work on? I see they do sell a rebuild kit. I do have some mechanical backgroud. But have never worked on marien engines.

you should get a manual so you know what goes where when you go to put it back together,( it's not to difficult.Especially if your mechanically inclined) or you can check out ebay for either parts or a whole lower unit. I got one there for a 20 HP as well as a 6 HP. bolted them right on and away I went. Just check the water impeller first if you go that route. its is better to repair when apart then to get it all together & find out the impeller isn't working.

On the starboard side of the engine is the shift lever. In the driveway with the engine off, shift it into forward. Go back to the engine and disconnect the cable connected to the gear shift. The object here is to ensure that the gear shift lever is fully engaged(fully forward). If not, you need to adjust the remote control cable that shifts it. It's a long shot, but try it.

Figured it out! It apears my govenor was hitting my fly wheel. Took gov. off no bump. spring on gov. Not hooked to anything. 73 evenrude 25hrpwr. How important is it to have the goven. and if absolutly nessisary, where to find one. Thanks, really appreciate the input. Richard..

I don't know what you removed that was hitting the flywheel ("govner"?), but no you shouldn't remove original equipment from the powerhead and leave springs attached to nothing. You ask where to get get a replacement if necessary so I assume what you took off is broken? Whatever it is, you need it.
Something hitting the flywheel will cause squeeling, rapid clacking, a big bang, or a combination of all three from the upper powerhead. It won't cause a "jumping out of gear" sensation or sheared prop pins. 90% of the time a sensation like that at higher RPM's is just exactly it feels like - jumping in and out of gear at higher RPM's. Your clutch dog is skipping. First you check the shift linkage to make sure the shift lever is properly aligned (what BoatBuoy was suggesting). When you decide that's not the problem then you buy a manual and you review old posts on clutch dog replacement on a 25HP while you wait for the manual to arrive. Use the red "Search" feature near the top of this page to search for "clutch dog".
Seloc's manual is fine; order one at the bottom left corner of this page.
