Motor fun fine last year. Took out for the first time and it run fine for an hour then started running slow. Pulled the plugs and one looked good and the center rode was gone from the other. Put new plugs in. Motor runs fine for 30 min or so then losses power. When I pull the plugs one looks good the other one has the center rode blown out. It is always the same cylinder that has the plug blown. New power pack and coils two years ago. Any ideas? It is old and before I take it to have work done I want to see if there is something I can do first.

I have no idea what a "rode" is. However, if you're speaking of the center spark plug electrode, are you speaking of the center portion that extends from the porcelain or the elbow portion leading to ground? You also say the same cylinder but do not say which cylinder... it does make a difference.<br /><br />In any case.... what is the compression readings of the cylinders, and does the spark (with the spark plugs removed) jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame (a real SNAP!)?<br /><br />What spark plugs are you using, and at what gap setting?<br /><br />Normally the problem you speak of is caused by a slight amount of water somehow entering the cylinder or the spark is too far advanced. Note that the improper spark advance setting would usually affect all cylinders.<br /><br />A lower compression reading on that cylinder would lead one into a failing head gasket or wearing sealing surface of the cylinder head or the block area.... but keep in mind that water can and will enter via other areas such as the exhaust baffle plate (either cylinder) or the powerhead seating gasket area (usually the bottom cylinder) to name two.

Yes by rode I ment the electrode. The center portion that extends from the porcelain into the motor towards the piston. It is the one on the bottom, not sure if this is #1 or #2. I dont have the tools to chack the compression.<br /><br />It sounds like this is not something that I should take to the shop to have fixed. Thanks for the insight.

OK, Last year was Champion RJ12C, they ran fine and then this year on the first time out we had the problem. Replaced with Autolite 258 and had same problem.<br /><br />"It sounds like this is not something that I should take to the shop to have fixed."<br />I ment to say that it sounds like this is something that I should take to the shop.<br /><br />Thanks

The correct plug is a Champion (Q)L77JC4, QL82C or L78C. Have you tried any of those?

As further reinforcement for what's been said, both the Champion RJ12C and Autolite 258 are primarily recommended for lawn/garden engine application, as well as some older autos. I also have a '77 35 hp Evinrude and I use Champion L77JC4 - work great.
