Looking for help on two fronts :

1.) Can any one tell me the year of my 3 Cyl 70 Hp Johnson? Serial # J5477948 ; Model number J70ELCIM.

2.) Fired it up for the first time this year and came back after about a hour or two to find a fare amount of lower shaft grease leaking out around the prop. Took the prop off, oil seem to be coming from up inside as opposed to where the shaft enters the housing. Looking for suggestions, is this a relatively simple fix or not - also what could it be?
I have two of these mounted on my 20' Mako and have owned them for about 20 years with out a single issue so I guess I cant complain

Thanks in advance

Chris

Re: 70 Hp Year and oil leak?

Hi Chris!

Looks like your motor is an 81. Are you sure thats an M and not an N on the end of your model number. If its an N it means counter rotating. If its an M I have no idea what it means.

Sounds like you have a seal blown in your lower unit. If you have a manual they not to hard to install.

If you doint you will have to take it to the boat shop. A manual will be about 20 bucks, parts around 50 or so.

If you take it to the boat shop, close to 500.00

Hi Chris!

Sorry I missed the M when I looked up your numbers. The M means manual tilt.

Thanks Guys,

Yes they are Manual tilt versions.

Yep checked the lower unit oil and its low - no doubt about what it is, its got that feel and smell to it. Checked tonight and it continues to drip...drip...drip.

So of course the next questions are the best place to get the parts and the books?

Thanks Again

Chris
