Headed the aluminum boat out this weekend with a 10 horse evinrude. It's just been serviced and ran decently. Mixed the oil and gas to manufacturer specs. Went about 3 or 4 miles out, and motor started whining like crazy. I shut it down. Let it cool off, and pulled the rope. Just loose. Drew back in, but no tension. I popped the hood and see that the casting for the whole recoil is broken. A big chunk, the size of your fist, right out of the top. Broken out. The recoil, as a result, was loose. No fixing it-I'll have to replace it, but I was wondering what would make this happen? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Did the retaining bolt come loose, and let the rope pulley fall down on the flywheel? Is the flywheel tight?

Not too good with all of the names, but that was my initial guess was that the retaining nut came loose up on top of the casing and allowed it to vibrate. Sadly, that bolt seems to have rattled down into something and while I was out, the engine just started screeching like crazy. My GUESS, and that's just what it would be, is that the nut came loose, vibrated that cover until it cracked, somehow allowing the bolt down into...what?....and the bolt got stuck against something that was spinning. This may have caused my terrible screeching noise and the broken cover allowed the recoil to come loose inside of....flywheel?....so I couldn't start it again. Some very nice people came and towed me home, God bless them....and my shoulders. In the meantime, I just thought I would get some opinions from some more experienced people.

Hi SFS,
FYI - the recoil comes off fairly easily and you can always wrap a rope around the flywheel to start it - saves you a tow in the future if you've got a screwdriver handy to pull the recoil.
FYI II - Same recoil housing was used on the 15 and 18hp models from the 1950s and 1960s, but the Rope Sheath part is unique to your motor...

- Scott

Thanks for the info, Chinewalker. As for the parts, I think this is going to fall on the marina that serviced it, if I'm not mistaken. I'll head back over there today. Just kinda gets you angry, you know? A lot of money goes into this stuff, and you hate to find out that they screwed it up, especially on the water.

Chinewalker, or anyone else who can answer, is there a parts list of interchangeable parts that I can get ahold of somewhere for this?
