I own an Evinrude 65, on a 15 fabuglas, It starts and run great BUT, when you try to accelerate pas a slow putt..putt it jumps into reverse, you gotta hole the controls to stay forward, what would cause this, the cables seem fine.

Ok, so theres only one cable going to the motor, right? Just a throttle cable, no shift cable. And of course the wiring harness. Correct?

Re: Going backwrds

You have the hydro-electric gearcase. It shifts on oil pressure. Two solenoids in the gearcase regulate where the oil travels. The motor is in forward by default -- no power to the solenoids or if the driveshaft isnt turning the unit will be in forward.

To get reverse the motor has to be running (driveshaft turning) AND you have to have power to both solenoids.

So, when you start the motor and shift into forward there is no power to the gearcase (solenoids). As you move the throttle something must be moving or shorting and sending 12 volts to both solenoid wires (green & blue).

You probably have the single lever control with the shift buttons since you have an Evinrude. Although the Johnson single lever control will work just fine.

I would start by disconnecting the shift wires at the powerhead and hooking a meter to them. With the key "On" move the lever as if you were in the water and in forward. If you get 12 volts to those wires I would look in the control box to see whats moving or shorting.
