Is there any other water outlet but the exhaust on this 1952-4 3hp Johnny? Had it on a rowboat, runs great, but just curious. And the smell off that motor of 2 stroke oil of olden days is just glorious!
You just get a mist out of the idle exhaust relief holes. If memory serves me right, they're on th front of the midsection, just below eth transom clamp/swivel.
You can also pull the flusher plug at the base of the tiller handle and observe water coming out from there. Don't run it like that though as that taps the cooling water before it runs through the block.

Nice one you have there! If you tell me the serial number I can pin down the year exactly (if you're curious).

Paul its a JW 10, ser #949337.... and "flusher plug at the base of the tiller handle "...thanks for that info, as looking to see how the impeller is doing its job. Sturdy little puppy, wish it wasn't so beat up externally. Got it for $50. Thanks in advance for your help. Robby

Those have the same size impellers as the later 40hp engines. Even a couple blades down it can supply plenty of water. Not suggesting you neglect the cooling system though.
The impeller is a cinch to replace. Four bolts and the lower unit drops. Pull the water pump housing and that's it. When the water pump housing is off, be extra careful not to pull up on the driveshaft at all (ie, out of the lower unit), or it's a pain to fix. New impeller, re-install the water pump screws, grease the top of the driveshaft splines and bolt it back on. Coat all your screws with a bit of gasket sealer and they'll come out much easier next time. ;)

The serial number works out to 1952 to me.

Thanks for the info Paul. I had a 58 18hp that I pulled a little too much and the driveshaft came right out. Went right back in, but as the powerhead was froze, I pulled the lower apart just to see what was up, as I was going to ebay it, and I try to be honest on stuff I sell. Thanks again for the great information!

No problem!
The pinion gear on the weedless drives likes to fall out and get wedged off to one side when the drive shaft gets pulled out. It's a real pain in the neck to get lined up again, but it is possible.
