Hello all,
Was wondering how much slop (spin) should there be in the prop when the unit is in forward or reverse with the engine not running? Should it be tight or should it spin left or right 1/8 to a 1/4 turn before engaging?
Thanks for any help anyone :) can give
Chris

Hey Chasman!

My 87 40hp has the same play as you describe. Ill call it 3/16 of turn, Just to split hairs.

For as I know this is normal. Any gear train has to have some amount of play, otherwise it would bind up when gears beging to warm up.

Dang service manual dosent say uh word about normal amount of free play.

These manuals assume's "we know" these little tid bits.

Good luck!

Ah, yes...assumptions. The OEM service manuals assume that the reader is an outboard mechanic, so lots of interesting little titbits are not disclosed, since they're "common knowledge."

In that regard, the second party manuals are better, since they do offer some information that is skipped by the OEM manuals.

Myself, I like to have both on hand. Before I do a particular job I haven't done before, I read that section in both my Seloc and OEM manuals. Between the two, the information is usually there.

Of course, neither tells you what to do when something doesn't go as planned, like twisting a bolt off, or a stuck driveshaft, or any of dozens of other problems.

And that's why the iboats forums are so helpful. We've all done all of those things and have solved those nasty problems, so we can help.

I've been really heartened to see folks with no experience as mechanics get their outboards up and running with the help of folks here. That's why I'm still here, long after my old Johnson is purring happily.

Yes, quite a bit. I just went outside to check mine for you. The easiest way to convey the play is to say one prop tip went from 12 o'clock to 2:30 on my '93.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I don't feel so bad about the amount of slop in my prop.
Thanks again for the input.
Chris

Re: Prop Slop 92 40hp

chas, my prop tip plays from 12 o'clock to 3:00. Either forward or reverse. 1986 Johnson 60

I do not remember what it was like when new, but I can't imagine it was this much and the clunk I hear when engaging gear suggests a lot of slop in there. At some point, the amount will become excessive and mean the gears are just meshing at the tips. Anyone know how much play is too much, or do I just wait until it blows? Harvey

Hello Chasman;
What you are describing is normal. There is 3 clutch dog tangs that engage the ramps on the gears, and what you are experiancing is the distance between the clutch dog tangs exaggerated by the prop blades.
