My 78 70hp johnson always starts fairly easily and runs well, for the first 15 minutes. Then it slowly gets slower until all it will do is go in gear. Once you give it abit of gas it will stall. Have taken it in for tune ups and was told its fine after they run it for 5 mins. Any help is appreciated.

Check your fuel tank vent to be sure its not closed or clogged up. Check all your fuel lines and primer bulb be sure they are soft and pliable. If it still does that try pumping the primer bulb. If it picks up, rebuild the fuel pump.

That was the first thing I checked. all fuel lines, bulb were replace last fall including the fuel pump. Remember it runs like a striped *** baboon the first 15 or so minutes, then it slows to a bog speed. Thanks anyway, Anyone else?

I assume if it's been in for tuneups and run in test tanks for 5 minutes then it's been compression tested and spark tested, impeller changed, etc. So we'll skip that for now.

Take the shroud off and take it for a run back and forth in front of the dock. Bring it up to "misbehaving" status and do some troubleshooting right then.

You could have an exhaust leak that's filling the shroud with exhaust. After 15 minutes it's starved for oxygen. Does running it without the shroud make it run better?

Is it getting hot? Make sure it's as cool after 20 minutes as it is after 10 minutes. The motor should be up to operating temp and the thermostat open after 10 minutes. If the motor keeps getting warmer after that then you have a cooling problem. Hot is serious. If it's getting too hot to touch then you're hot horn is broken and you're killing the motor. Shut it down!

Ignition parts (dying coils, powerpacks, even cracked spark plugs) can start misbehaving after warming to a high enough temperature and holding there for a bit. After the motor gets warm and begins acting up and won't do anything but idle, start pulling plug wires one at a time. If you pull a plug wire and the motor doesn't run any different then you've dropped that cylinder. Bring along a bolt that you can fit into the spark plug boot. As you pull plug wires, push the bolt into the plug boot and hold it close to the motor block. Look for good spark. Wear rubber dishwashing gloves and keep clear of the flywheel while doing this.

Post results.

Great ideas itstippy!! I have never attempted your suggestions but will. Yes its been compression and spark tested. I have been concerned about overheating. Sorry for the ignorance but I dont think I have a hot horn, I will do some research on that. Again Im ignorant-the shroud is that the plastic cover over the air intakes?
Thanks Bud!!

By "shroud" I just mean the motor cover. The hood. It is not uncommon for an exhaust gasket to go bad; exhaust leaks out and accumulates under the motor cover. After a while the exhaust fumes are getting sucked into the air intakes and starving the motor for oxygen. People can't figure out why the thing runs great in a test tank while they're fiddling with it but dies on the water - never thinking that when it's in the test tank they have the cover off.
