Welcome to the forum!

My guess is that you still have a switch problem. Mabey grounded wire some place. Or one that is suposed to be grounded and has become lose and or corroed.

Does your control box have a deadman kill switch. Suposed to have a lanyard tied to your belt when your driveng.

Good luck!

Re: 70 hp johnson don't fire

As soon as you turn your key from ignition, power transfers through your solonoid and adds power to your starter which in turn makes your starter come to life. If you were able to turn the key before that one time and get going as long as the key was all the way over than I would be hesitant to beleive that it was your solonoid, but you never know if your getting nothing now than I guess it's always a possibiliy. I had the same problem with my rude about 2 months ago. All it was was one of my connectors on the ignition came undone just enough not to supply continuous power back to the engine, so I had to hold the key over in the start position and when it fired I had to keep the key in the start position for it to keep running.

Hold the button in and try starting it. Its suposed to be held in by some sorta key with the lanyard attached. the lanyard attaches to you.

Just incase you deside to junp out while cruesing down the river it will kill the engine.

Solinoid is to jump heavy juice to starter thats its only job.

Good luck!

Check the fuse near the starter, small red wire with rubber like bulb,if not their should be one someplace in the motor compartment. If this is blown nothing works but the starter. Ive blown mine with the tilt motor couple times.

Good luck!

Re: 70 hp johnson don't fire

I also have a 1978 70hp Johnson and actually if the fuse is blown the starter will not function. Also, there should not be any 12 volt source going to the ignition module (power pack) as it will damage the module. Your motor has a magneto ignition system and all voltages to run the motor are generated by a stator underneith the flywheel. The keyswitch and safety switch both stop the engine by grounding the black/yellow wire connected to terminal #6 (bottom/left side) of the ignition module killing the spark to the sparkplugs. So, the connection to the black/yellow wire needs to be open for spark to occur. BTW, this is why a standard ignition switch can't be used as it normally provides only a closed connection when turned on. Hope this helps.
