I have a 1990 GT-150 V6. I discovered two broken magnets and two loose magnets which I managed to get out while letting the penitrating oil soak in the flywheel/crank shaft. I still do not have the flywheel off. Is it difficult to put new magnets on? How Critical is the placement of them?

Once you get the flywheel off you can pop all of them out. Its no big deal. The trick is getting the surface clean so when you reglue them, they'll stay. We usually bead blast the flywheel. Just mark where one is now and then use bolts to space them out. Notice that one corner has a bevel like cut. Reposition them all like they came off.

You can use any good 2 part epoxy type glue. If some are broke you can get replacements from and Evinrude / Johnson dealer. Most stock them.

Industrial Formulators G-2 Epoxy is the strongest epoxy I have ever used. This is for stuff you want never to come apart, like airplane propellors,...

Re: Broken / Loose Magnets on Flywheel

Dhadley, thanks. I started with no spark, then as I followed the trouble shooting guide gain spark in five cylinders without changing any parts. I wa able to start and run it on five cylenders. Finally, I had spark in all 6 and tarted it one time, then the motor would not crank. That is when I noticed the magnets. I wounder if a magnet was making contact with the coils causing a lacck of spark, then as it wore away with the cranking, I slowly got ignition back. I still have not gotten the flywheel off to inspect everything.

If the magnets were striking the laminations, there will still be metal shavings stuck to the magnet and in the magnetic field gap. This will reduce the efficiency of the coil resulting in a weak spark. The coil will also show signs of rubbing. Best pull the flywheel.
