carburator or fuel supply problem?

I've been working an older Johnson seahorse. It's a 1958 AD-12 7-1/2 horse. It starts and runs for a few seconds, then quits. It does run smooth while it's running. I've removed the glass bowl, cleaned it out, and replaced the seal. I've had it running a few times for about about a max of 30 seconds by continually pumping the primer, but it eventually quits anyway. Do you think it's not holding the pressure enough, or possibly the carb. is all gunked up? Before I removed the bowl, etc, it did leak fuel out around the seal, and I had the same problem keeping it running. But now, it doesn't appear to leak there anymore. Most of the time, after priming, it starts on first or second pull. My arm is getting tired! Any ideas?

You have the old "crud in the carb" problem. Time for a thorough cleaning & rebuild.

This was converted for use with a single line tank? If so, the conversion might be faulty -- air leaks at the fuel pump, perhaps. On a single line setup, the fuel pump is usually suspect if you have to keep the motor running by using the bulb.

I'm using an original two-line tank. It does seem to hold pressure while priming before turning it over.
