I cant find the line on the cam and I dont know what to line it up with once I find it. I have the Seloc manual. My motor doesnt look look the one in the diagrams

You have to host them over on a seperate site (check out tinypic.com as an example). When you host a file there, it'll give you a link like this:
http://tinypic.com/4qkefa
Plug that URL into the box that pops up when you hit the IMAGE button in Iboats.

What's different than your seloc manual, the engine or the cam?

The spot that shows the timing mark on the cam follower, I cant find it, it seems different than mine

I also have a 9.5 with similiar problem... first on yours, I had to pop off the flywheel and clean the cam.. found the mark.

On my motor, runs fine until I need real power then it runs hard but never "clean", kinda sounds like it is "4stroking" or missing a stroke here and there... real bad loss of power, bad fuel use, smells rich... I have rebuilt carb, replaced/alligned and set points, set the "timing" and still no better...

? is there anything I can do in the carb for high speed adjust ?
? is there any way to check the fuel pump (but I think I have enough fuel, smells rich) ?
? is there any way to check for good spark ?

any help... been tinkering for a while with it and can't get-r done!!

thanks.

Paul, the manual shows a photo of the carb behind the start recoil, and the cam looks different also.here is what I have.

I understand the primary pickup notes #2 butthe location states#7 Center of mark, and I cant find a mark, The seloc book shows it in a completely different place, behind a different carb, and it seems, on a different motor.

Re: 60's 9.5 johnson will idle but has no top end

I have a 1964 Johnson 5.5. When I first bought the motor it seemed like it should have more top end power and was running rediculously rich. It would foul plugs out about every hour of use. I figured that it was a carb. problem and upon taking it apart, realized that the slow speed jet was put together wrong. After that, it ran great. So, if possible, find an exploded view of the carb. and take it apart. You might as well buy a rebuild kit and put it in while you're at it. They're only a few bucks. The exploded view can be found at a marine center that sells johnson parts.
BTW- these Seloc manuals are horrible. I hate them because there's absolutely no detail. I'll have to try to find an oem manual for all my engines.

Yeah, that's definitely a problem with Seloc. They have no picture of your engine being timed (and when they do, they've got it pictured wrong!).

That is the cam they're talking about, and I think that bump is the mark - it's about where it should be. But I'm not 100% certain. Hopefully wayne or someone else who really knows these 9.5s will be along.

I have had a couple engines with no marks on their cams at all though... :(

Re: 60's 9.5 johnson will idle but has no top end

I have adjusted the idle and high speed , the best I can using that mark, but the wot if fairly eratic rpm rising and falling on its own. Sometimes, if I pump the throttle back and forth a few times it will come up to high revs but wont always stay. Also I am having a problem when I replace the hood. It seems to run awesome with the hood off, but on, it dies down and seems to be starving for air. Ive checked for blockages and have found everything to be ok. This motor also is smoking much more than I remember last year. Im sure this motor needs to be run on a more regular basis. I guess I should really rebuild the carb and clean it right out, its possible that I didnt get all the fuel out last fall.

Oh no. Sounds like you have a problem with the infamous exhaust doughnut gasket. Search this forum for "9.5 exhaust":
http://www.oddjobmotors.com/images/jonhsonmqpowerhead.jpg
It's that large black gasket just a few inches above the bottom. You've got to nearly completely disassemble the engine to get to it.

If you can come up with a novel solution, use it.

As for the WOT problem, check out spark (3/8" gap) if pumping the primer bulb doesn't seem to do anything. It sounds to me like it's arcing over. Especially if it seems to suddenly kick in/out.

Link & sync does not affect WOT, just midrange and idle (a bit).

If the exhaust doughnut gasket is bad, that will cause the motor to breathe exhaust?

If so inclined, couldn't you just create an air intake to the carb was getting air from outside the cowling? some creative flex hose and a hole in cover(with water shield!) might help.

How about going ahead and putting in a fan to force air to carb... turbo baby!!!! :)

Hay Paul hows she going your arcing over thought could be it My little 64 9.5 dragged bad at high speed in fact there was none ,after testing everything I bought points and condensers while doing them I noticed a little black just under one of the coils .Sure enough the coil popped a hole and arced on the case only sometimes, tested fine and spark was fine when tested Replaced it runs like a
champ again,so now I have a new set of points and condensors in stock .I cyl new coil other still orginal amazing eh!
