How long should one keeps earmuffs on and motor running to properly flush after salt water use. Also,is there a cleaner that can be added to hose to ensure a better job of removing salt. Thanks

Re: Flushing motor

Well I usually let mine run for about five minutes or so. I havent heard of any cleaner attachments for flushng other then the ears you are already using, and im not sure if there are any additives out there either, but when flushing my motor I would be cautious of anything other then just clean fresh water running through the lower unit.

How long should you let it run..

As long as you think necessary, the longer the better, but I'd think at least 5 minutes with good water flow.

.. and should you put ii into gear at all-to get the prop spinning?

I wouldn't without having a real good reason.

I have a "SaltAway" attachment that I fill with dishwashing soap. Helps with chemical pollutants as well as salt. ;)

I use saltaway & it seems to work pretty good. It comes with a bottle you connect to the hose & ear muffs. I usually fill it with saltaway & flush until the liquid is gone. usuall aorund 10 minutes.

Re: Flushing motor

tampaskiffer,

I have two big motors that run in salt water. I found Salt Away at the listed sites and really like the way it cleans the motors, boat, and reels after using in salt water.

www.westmarine.com
www.boatus.com
www.boatersworld.com

Once you get on the home page of these sites, use the search window to type Salt-Away and it will take you to the page where their products are displayed.

The instructions on the bottle are real clear.

Good luck and happy boating..

Re: Flushing motor

Try washup liquid, added by pouring a few teaspoonfulls into the hose before connection to the motor. It sure cleans the insides.
