Yesterday while trying to get my boat back across the gulfstream from Bimini I was experiencing major engine malfunctions. Problem was with the hurricane in the Atlantic the seas were rough enough that I had to push it on across. No way could I stop and work on my engine in 6 to 7 foot seas. Once in trouble I made the decision to push it untill it broke or made it across. My buddy boat was there with me in case I had to be towed or even abandon my boat to save my tail. It took over 10 hours to cross but we made it....Anyway enough about the trip (adventure). My engine wouldn't push me more than about 7 mph full throttle. I could cut back to idle for a few minutes then I could get full throttle out of her for a few moments at which time she would just power back again. I actually crossed the gulfstream at 5mph and burned 50 gallons of fuel doing so. The reason I know is I have a 50 gal tank and ran out 1 mile from Ft Lauderdale. My buddy boat went and fetched me a 5 gallon can of gas and once fueled up she ran fine for some time when the trouble began again.<br /><br />I don't think she was running hot but do suspect a faulty temp sensor may have been sending a signal to shut down the engine. Does this make any sense? Any other ideas? Hope I didn't do any damage to the engine, under any other circumstances I would never push a poorly running engine for 10 hours but I had no choice.<br /><br />Thanks for any advice.

Re: Johnson 115 power loss

maybe the motor threw a code and set the engine in s.l.o.w. wich will make it not operate over 1500 rpm, or the throttle position sensor went bad some how. best thing is is to get a ****ty lap top computer, buy the diagnostic disc and cable to connect to your motor, and go into the program and see what codes were set, or just go into the motors running stats and see if anything is upset, looks to me like you threw a code that made your motor run in s.l.o.w. mode... all of this info only applies to ficht motors not carburated....

Sounds like you had quite a day Gator, glad you made it safely. <br /><br />You will need to give us your model number. <br /><br />Good luck!

It is not a ficht, it is a 98 115 spl. Don't have the model number handy but will get it in the morning. I will probably pull the cowling off and start looking at it in the morning. I wanted to look at it today but was so sore I could barely get out of bed. I think I've got a minor case of whiplash along with a bruised kidney. I actually urinated red when I got out of the boat. On the way home I had my son pull into a hospital then decided not to go in. Wish I had time to go into the whole story. Could be a lesson for everybody on what not to do in a boat.

gator, i had the same problem with my 50, so far i traced it to a holed fuel pipe in one of the carburators, lean condition i think. In my case tell tail was hotter than usual and plug/s was nearly dry
