I just bought a used boat/motor/trailer. It came with a 40 Hp johnson (Model 40es 70a - Serial C 30934). Two part quetion. First, would anyone know the oil/gas mix for this motor. The seller stated it has been run for about a year but the engine looks in great shape. Second, under the aft there is an electrical box in which I believe is a solenoid for the starter because the red battery cable is attached there. I don't know where the black cable to the battery goes. The problem is I'm not shy of electrical but the key is wired to the, i guess, dash and the controller is hook up. Maybe I'm making this harder than it appears. The seller gave me a black battery cable to be hooked up. Anyones ideas, suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from some good Johnson owners.
Thanks and Cheers,
From NOVA SCOTIA, Canada
Steve

Re: New 1970 40 HP JOHNSON OWNER

Welcome to Iboats, boater10!

Congrats on the new boat. That engine takes a 50:1 mix with 87 octane gas and TC-W3 rated outboard oil. That's 20ml of oil for each litre of gas.
The black battery cable normally hooks up to the bottom bolt/nut of the electric starter's bracket. Really you could hook it up to a number of places on the block, but that tends to be the most convinient.

If you ever get fiddling with the ignition switch, it's ultra-important to know that the 12 volt system has absolutely nothing to do with the ignition system. It just cranks the engine.

Hope that helps, and if you've got any more questions don't hesitate to ask!

Re: New 1970 40 HP JOHNSON OWNER

Welcome Aboard!!

My '71 40 hp E'rude was GIVEN to me!! Johnson is same. 1) Would be 50:1 mix. 2) My solenoid switch happens to be in the motor cavity. I have a '59 18 hp John. that has the solenoid switch in the box you are describing. My black (neg) cable was in my wiring harness and went to a ground situation at the motor (basically any bolt big enough for the lug to bolt to). 3) ENJOY!! That's a lot of what everyone here does besides actually using their boat!!
